 – 8 Bible Journaling Ideas: Inspirational and Creative Ideas for Your Devotional Time

Bible journaling is the perfect way to breathe new life into the time you spend with God.

It allows you to be creative and study the Bible in a whole new way. Just something as simple as drawing lines and arrows between different scriptures can help you gain fresh new insight into a Bible passage.

I discovered this when I decided to create my own journaling study Bible which I will discuss more a little later.

All of a sudden, through Bible journaling, I was able to see a familiar passage in a whole new way.

That’s why I’m excited to share with you 8 easy Bible journaling ideas that I hope will help you deepen your relationship with God and learn more about His will for your life.

– 8 Simple Yet Unique Bible Journaling Ideas To Deepen Your Bible Study Time & Walk With Christ

Now I know that Bible journaling and Bible studying are two different things. Bible journaling is more like Bible art or even in a way Bible scrapbooking (this is my own personal way of looking at it). B

ible journaling allows you to creatively worship God.

And then of course, Bible studying is when we read the Bible and then dive deep into the meaning of what we are reading by doing further research.

But I see no reason why we can’t do both Bible study and Bible journaling at the same time!

These Bible study journaling ideas that I’m going to share with you will allow you to creatively study God’s word. You can be an artist while still gaining a deeper knowledge of God’ word. Let’s learn how!

1) See A Verse Through New Eyes

It can be super easy to rush through familiar passages of scripture. If you find yourself doing that, you can use this Bible journaling technique to force yourself to slow down and really dive deeper into each individual verse.

Find a Bible verse that inspires you and write it down. If you want to draw a picture that you feel represents that verse you can or you can move on to the next step.

Now write down what you believe God is saying to you through this verse. Write down who the original audience would have been and try putting yourself in their shoes.

See the verse through the eyes of the Israelites or the Corinthians or whoever that particular book was written to. If you don’t know the original audience, a little research might be in order.

Journaling this way will ensure that you look at God’s word with fresh eyes.

2) Color-Coded Scripture Writing

Do you know how some Bibles have the words of Jesus written in red? You can do this in your journal as well.

When you are writing certain scriptures, you can use different colored pencils & pens based on who is speaking. Or you can choose colors based on certain types of scripture.

Use a pink pen for the poetic parts of scripture and a blue one for the more comforting portions of scripture.

For commands, use a bold color to emphasize the importance of what God is saying in that scripture. The possibilities are endless!

3) Memorize Scripture With Bible Journaling

We are instructed to write God’s word on our hearts and this Bible journaling technique that I’m going to share is an amazing way to do this.

One way to memorize scripture is to write a verse or passage several times until it is etched in your memory.

However, because a picture is worth a thousand words, drawing a Bible verse can make that scripture come alive like never before. I call this Bible journaling technique Sentence Drawing and it’s both simple and effective for scripture memorization.

Simply put, what you do is use a combination of words and illustrations to make committing a passage of scripture to memory easier.

Let’s use Proverbs 3:5 as an example to learn how to use this technique. Proverbs 3:5 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (NIV).

What you would do is think of an image that represents certain words in this verse.

Perhaps when you see the word trust, you think of hugging someone you love.

Or maybe when you think of the Lord, you picture Him on His throne looking over you from above.

Whatever it is that pops into your mind when you hear certain words, draw that image in place of the actual word as you are writing the sentence.

If there are any words you can’t draw, then you would write the actual word instead.

When you’re finished, you would have created an illustrated sentence that will help you remember that verse for years to come. And please don’t stress, if you’re drawing isn’t perfect. You can use stick figures if you want.

The point of the journaling activity is to connect with God and His word on a deeper level not create the next Picasso.

4) Draw Biblical Heroes

In this bible journaling project, you will draw a picture of a biblical person. You can choose a character from the Old Testament or New Testament, and if you’re feeling really ambitious, both.

Include some important details about them in your drawing. What is their occupation? What are some things that they’ve accomplished?

In addition to adding creativity to your devotional time, you’ll be learning more about the Bible by looking at characters from scripture.

5) Create Art Work From Your Bible Journal

One way to bring scripture into your life is by making it tangible. You can start by creating scripture artwork using a program like Canva.

Turn one of your sentence drawings that we discussed earlier, into a piece of art using graphic design software,

Then print it out using photo paper and hang it on your wall. Creating your own original biblical artwork will not only bring you closer to God but will also serve as a conversation piece for anyone that comes into your home!

Sharing the gospel just got a whole lot easier!

6) Use Bible Journaling Printables In A Binder

Another Bible journaling idea is to create your own Bible study journal binder using journaling printables.

Printables are beautifully made documents that you print at home on your own printer.

There are many different kinds of Bible journaling printables like Bible study printables, coloring pages, art printables, prayer journal printables, and more.

To try this Bible journal idea, you’ll need a binder, tab dividers, printables, and any other journaling supplies you want to use.

Search online for Bible or faith-based printables, buy, download, print them out and start building a unique Bible study journal customized for your own personal walk with God.

7) Create Your Own Journaling Bible

Being able to create your own journaling study Bible is something I just recently discovered.

What you’ll need is a Bible you don’t mind writing in, sticky notes, washi tape, pens, paper clips.

As you go through a passage of scripture you can use your pen to draw parallels between different parts of the passage.

Underline patterns in the passage using the same color pen. Write down cross-reference scriptures, questions, thoughts, and prayers on sticky notes and secure the note on the page with washi tape.

Draw any relevant Bible verses. If there is enough room, make notes in the margin of the page.

My journaling study Bible has become so special to me because of how personalized it is and I highly encourage you to create your own too!

7) Bible Journal On The Go
