Did it feel like a chore rather than a rewarding or inspiring practice?

If your answers are here are yes, you are not alone.

While you may find tons of articles on the internet posting about the importance of journaling and how it can enhance your life, it may not be enough to get you started.

This is another possible reason why many people give up their journaling practice before they even get started.

So today, let’s just walk through some of the most effective journaling prompts that will help you start journaling effectively.

These easy journal prompts are divided into 4 categories.

– So What Is Journaling, Anyway?

Journaling is simply a process of creating a written record of your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. You write about your beliefs, aspirations, goals, and so much more.

It’s a great way to express your emotions in a healthy way.

You can write about anything in your journal from the places you travel to, your dreams, habits you want to track, and the possibilities are endless.

And journaling is not restricted to writing.

You can dress up your journal with drawings, paintings, doodles, coloring, art, and anything else you can imagine!

– 7 Benefits Of Journaling

The benefits of journaling are myriad, y’all, trust me. It’s gotten me through more hard times than I can count.

There’s something about taking the time to express yourself through journaling that really gives you mental clarity and a sense of peace.

If you are wondering how you can benefit from journaling, here’s a breakdown of just some of the ways it can help you.

1) Reduces Stress and Anxiety

All of us have countless things to worry about in our lives. Journaling helps work through those deep anxious feelings and obsessive worries before you descend into clinical depression.

Noting your thoughts and emotions down in a journal can help you identify the root cause of the stress-inducing thoughts and distorted beliefs

When you know the cause of your distress, you can get mental clarity along with pragmatic solutions to deal with it accordingly.

2) Improve mental clarity and communication skills

Not all of us are the best at expressing ourselves.

We may have thousands of thoughts in our minds but because they are so jumbled and tangled you don’t know how to sort them out. Journaling makes you more aware of your actions and thoughts and why you do the things you do.

The more self-aware you are, the better you can express your views and opinions.

This is where journaling can help you mend your relationships by harnessing communication skills.

I know for me personally, I’ve written plenty of letters to people with who I had a conflict but didn’t always know where to begin to solve the conflict.

Writing letters and writing in my journal provided me with mental clarity and helped me better understand why I was upset and how to resolve the issues.

Of course, you could just bottle up all of your feelings inside and never deal with them. But the thing is, they usually come out in one way or another.

It could be with outbursts of anger or crying at the worst times (ask me how I know). Clearly, a better option is to take your anger out on your journal instead.

Then hopefully you can have a calmer and more rational discussion with whoever you’re fighting with.

3) Reduces Sleeping Disorders

Having trouble sleeping?

One of the biggest reasons you may not be sleeping well are the bottled-up thoughts and emotions running through your mind making it impossible to get those 8 hours of crucial sleep.

It could also be the list of unfinished tasks circling in your mind at bedtime.

When you journal your thoughts before bedtime, you can free your mind from all the intrusive thoughts and emotions.

This will help you to sleep peacefully and longer.

4) Journaling helps you crush your goals

Did you know that journaling also helps you get closer to your goals?

When you write down your goals in your journal, you subconsciously get closer to your goals because now that you’ve written them down they become more real.

Any goals you write in your journal act as a positive affirmation that you are moving in the right direction and closer to your goal.

You can also create a plan such as a weight loss plan to achieve your goals and track the progress with a journal.

I have several fitness planners & journals in my shop that you look at here .

5) Deeper relationship with God

Using a prayer journal or Bible study journal gives a written record of your relationship with Christ.

You can look over the prayers that you wrote down 6 months ago or 6 years ago.

You can look at how much closer you are to God than you were a year ago or you can see that you’ve grown further apart than you realized just based on what you’ve written in your journals.

I highly recommend you try it if you haven’t already.

6) Improve Your Financial Future

Do you have financial plans and goals? Then write them down in your journal! This is the first step in making them a reality.

Then use your journal to keep track of your progress.

Using a financial goals journal has helped me get out of thousands of dollars of debt, build an emergency fund, and build my retirement accounts.

7) Faster weight loss

Journaling can also help you reach your weight loss goals faster? How you ask?

Because weight loss is not just about working out and eating right at least not in theory.

Sometimes you need to work through some mental blocks and trauma in order to understand why losing weight has been such a challenge.

Plus, I use my weight loss journal as a prayer journal as well because I always want the Lord to be involved with everything I try to do.

– What Do I Need To Start Journaling?

So what do you need to start journaling?

Well, the answer to that is, it depends. If all you want to do is write in a journal or notebook to express your feelings then this is all you need: a journal and a pen.

There are all kinds like weight loss printables,  Bible journaling printables,  coloring pages, grief journals and so much more! When you use journaling printables you can create an extremely unique journal that caters to your needs and wants.

3) Writing & Drawing Tools

Whether it be pens, pencils, colored pencils, paints and paintbrushes, you need some sort of writing utensils to begin journaling.

4) Stamps

You can use these to create planners, calendars, designs and so much more in your journal or bullet journals.

5) Compass
