How to Straighten Your Hair Step-by-Step (When You Feel Too Overwhelmed to Start)

I’m going to walk you through how to straighten your natural hair step-by-step in a way that actually feels doable.

Before You Start (This Part Matters More Than You Think)
Before you even touch your hair, do this:
- Pick a time where you’re not rushed
- Gather everything you need first
- Accept that this might take a while
👉 The goal is not speed. The goal is finishing.
Because rushing = frustration = quitting halfway.
And we’re not doing that today.
Step 1: Wash with a Smoothing Shampoo
Start with a shampoo that helps reduce frizz and smooth your hair.
This helps your hair:
- behave better
- respond better to heat
- come out sleeker in the end
👉 You’re setting the foundation here.
Step 2: Condition Your Hair Well
Don’t rush this part.
A good conditioner:
- softens your hair
- makes detangling easier
- prepares your hair for styling
👉 If your hair feels better here, everything after this is easier.
Step 3: Do a Cool or Cold Rinse (Yes, I Know 😩)
I know this is not your favorite step.
But it helps:
- smooth the hair
- reduce frizz
- support a sleeker result
👉 Ease into it. Don’t shock your system 😂
Step 4: Apply a LIGHT Leave-In
This is where things can go wrong.
You do NOT want to:
- overload your hair
- use heavy, water-based products
👉 Keep it light.
You want smoothness… not puffiness.
Step 5: Blow Dry Your Hair with Tension
This step makes a HUGE difference.
A good blow dry:
- stretches your hair
- reduces how much work your flat iron has to do
- helps your hair come out smoother
👉 Take your time here. This is where a lot of the magic happens.
Step 6: Apply a Heat Protectant
Non-negotiable.
Use something like:

- or another heat protectant you like
This helps:
- protect your hair
- reduce damage
- keep your hair from feeling dry
Step 7: Flat Iron in Small Sections (Use the Chase Method)
This is where technique matters.
👉 Use small sections
👉 Comb or brush through first (chase method)
👉 Then follow with the flat iron
Also:
👉 Try to get close to the roots (without burning yourself)
This is what gives you:
- smoother results
- movement
- that “swang” 😂
Step 8: Take Breaks If You Need To
Let me say this clearly:
👉 You are allowed to pause.
If you:
- get tired
- feel overwhelmed
- start getting frustrated
Take a break.
Sit down. Scroll. Eat something. Come back later.
Because rushing through the second half of your head?
👉 That’s how you end up with one side cute and the other side… not 😅
Step 9: Finish with a Light Serum or Smoothing Product
Once you’re done, you can use a small amount of product to:
- add shine
- reduce frizz
- smooth everything out

Too much = weighed down hair

Step 10: Protect Your Hair at Night
This is how you keep your results.
At night:
- wrap your hair (if you can)
- or use a satin bonnet or scarf
- sleep on a satin pillowcase (backup plan)
👉 This prevents:
- dryness
- breakage
- losing your style overnight
If You Feel Overwhelmed Halfway Through…
This is the part nobody talks about.
You might:
- get tired
- lose motivation
- want to quit
That doesn’t mean you failed.
👉 It just means your brain is overwhelmed.
Take a break.
Come back.
Finish later.
This is not a race.
The Simple Version (For When You Really Don’t Feel Like Doing All This)
If this feels like too much, focus on:
- good blow dry
- heat protectant
- small sections
- protect your hair at night
That alone will get you decent results.
The Glow-Up Lesson I Had to Learn
For the longest time, I thought:
