The Bible is God’s living word, a source of strength and guidance. The Bible is filled with God’s encouragement for those who feel weighed down by the challenges of life.
When you pray with scriptures, it takes your focus away from your challenge and reminds you of God’s love and strength to help and restore you. Scripture helps you focus on God’s promises.
Even when our Lord Jesus Christ was faced with challenges, he used the scripture to overcome them. That said, you can also do the same, and I can show you how to begin.
* 7 Scripture To Pray When You Feel Overwhelmed *
Now I’m going to share with you 7 scriptures that you can turn to whenever you feel like life is getting to crazy (which is probably every day.
Or you need some reminders about who Jesus is and where our focus should be. Yes, I know focusing on Jesus is a struggle. It is definitely a major challenge for me, too.
That’s why later, if you stick around, I’m going to share a few ideas you can use to make focusing on these scriptures a little bit easier.
* Matthew 11:28-30 (Jesus Offers Rest)*
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest….” (source)
In this Bible verse, our Lord Jesus Christ offers rest, he knows you’re burdened and that the weight is too much for you. He knows you’re overwhelmed. He calls you to rest in Him and allow Him to carry the burden for you.
With that understanding, let’s pray.
“Lord Jesus, I accept your invitation of rest. Lord, I lay my burdens down at your feet and I trust in your rest. Take away the feeling of being overwhelmed from me, for in Christ’s name I pray.” Amen.
* Philippians 4:6-7 (God’s Peace in Anxiety)*
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God….” (source)
No matter how much you worry, you cannot change your situation. Worry doesn’t bring solutions. That’s why this scripture encourages surrendering all worries to God through prayer.
When you cast aside your worries and table your request to God in prayer, he brings calm and peace to your life. Say this prayer.
“Dear Lord, I table my worries before you this moment. Lord Jesus, take away my anxiety and give me your perfect peace that knows no bounds. Calm the storm in my heart and let your peace reign.” For in Christ’s name I pray, Amen!
* Isaiah 41:10 (God’s strength in Our Weakness)*

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God…” (source)
This scripture reminds us that God will uphold us when we are feeling overwhelmed. In difficult times when it seems impossible, he will be there to show Himself strong on our behalf. With that assurance, say this prayer;
“Father, I know on my own I can do nothing; my strength cannot see me through.
Lord Jesus, please help me trust in your strength when I feel weak, help me stand on your promise in Isaiah 41:10, be my strength through this period. Thank you, Father, for I know you’ve answered my prayers in Christ’s name, I pray. Amen!”
* 2 Corinthians 12:9 (God’s Grace is Sufficient) *
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (source)
This scripture emphasizes our limitations and tells us we don’t have to be strong on our own, we can rely on God’s grace that is sufficient for us and his power that is made perfect in weakness.
So when you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that God has promised his grace is sufficient for you. With that understanding, say this prayer;
“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge your grace and power. I know that being overwhelmed is inevitable. But Lord Jesus, let your grace sustain me when I feel overwhelmed.
Come to my aid with your sufficient grace and bring peace into my heart. For in Christ’s name I pray. Amen!”
* John 16:33 (Jesus Overcame the World)*
“In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (source)
This scripture reminds us that although troubles would come and we would be overwhelmed, we should take heart. Whatever troubles we face, they’re all temporary, as Jesus has already conquered the world. So when you pray, say:
“Lord, I believe that you have overcome the world just like John 16:33 promises. Help me find peace in you, for I know you have overcome all things, and whatever troubles I face now are temporary; help me stand strong in you. Thank you, Father, for in Christ’s name I pray. Amen!”
* 1 Peter 5:7 (Casting Our Cares on God)*
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (source)
This scripture highlights the importance of total surrender. It encourages us to surrender and drop whatever is overwhelming us to God’s care, he cares for us and doesn’t want us to go through that alone. Knowing this, you can pray likewise;
“Lord Jesus, I cast all my worries on you. I give them to you. I give you all that troubles me, knowing you love and care for me. Father, please, in your love, give me peace and comfort. Thank you, Father, for in Christ’s name I pray.” Amen!
* How to Use These Scriptures Daily*
There is no set-in-stone formula for using these scriptures to pray. But I just wanted to share some insight with you that you might find helpful.
Now, if you’ve been here before, then you probably already know what I’m about to say. My biggest piece of advice is to write these scriptures down in a journal so you can access them easily.
With my forgetful self, in moments of despair or overwhelm, it’s not likely that I will remember which scriptures to turn to in that exact moment.
But if I’ve put them in my prayer journal, then I always know where to look to find them.
And since my favorite prayer journal is a digital journal, which you can take a look at here, then I can also include a link to these scriptures so I can read them in context.
Another idea is to use these scriptures as a part of your bedtime prayer routine (if you have one). You could meditate over them daily to prevent the overwhelm from even coming!
When you feel overwhelmed, pray them out loud. You can also go on a memory verse challenge where you memorize one verse per day. Likewise, keep them visible as reminders using sticky notes or even as your phone wallpaper.
* Conclusion & Call To Action *
It’s worth noting that struggling alone would not help you in any way. I encourage you to involve God and turn to his word because worldly solutions don’t bring peace.
True peace is found in Jesus Christ, and you can only get that when you turn to him in prayer.
Remember, God cares for you and doesn’t want you to struggle alone. You can share your favorite scripture for when you feel overwhelmed in the comments to help someone who might just need that scripture
