Often, we make the mistake of thinking our daily prayer routine has to be long or rigid.
When you have that mindset, you put pressure on yourself to pray for long periods, but that’s not necessarily a way to create a consistent prayer routine.
God cherishes consistency over length. You can start by praying a 2 to 3-minute heartfelt prayer every day. God values that above praying 30 minutes today and one hour just over a month away.
You can start with two minutes daily and gradually increase the time in such a way that it will not disturb your connection and consistency. Doing that will help you create a consistent prayer routine.
(Side note: I have a whole blog post dedicated to sharing bedtime prayer ideas that I think you will love because they are perfect for women who have trouble with focus!)
* Use A Prayer Journal To Stay Focused *
Another way to create a consistent prayer routine is by using prayer journals. With prayer journals, you can write down your prayer points and reduce or eliminate any distractions in the place of prayer.

* Set A Prayer Trigger Or Reminder*
See prayer like a time when you have a date with your lover. And employ similar tactics by tying prayer to existing habits, could be before meals or after your morning coffee.
Making prayer like a meeting that you can’t miss is a great way to make time for prayer, even in the busiest season!
You can also set an alarm on your clock or phone to remind you about your prayer time. You can then use sticky notes as a gentle reminder for your daily prayer. Doing this can help you build a consistent prayer routine.
* Pray Out Loud Or Use Voice Notes *

This is my personal favorite. Praying out loud helps keep the mind engaged. When you pray and speak aloud, your mind doesn’t have time to wander as it is active.
That way, you can pray with little to no distractions.
Also, you can record voice prayers and play them back to reinforce the prayer habit you desire to build. Listening to voice prayer recordings moves your spirit to want to pray, and that way, you build a prayer routine gradually.
* Use Scriptures To Guide Your Prayer Time *
This is a good ADHD prayer tip, as reading a short Bible verse before praying can help provide focus. It fixes your mind and attention on the scripture you’ve just read.
Also, using scriptures can give you a structured approach to having a daily prayer routine. You can start with bible prayers like the Lord’s Prayer or psalms when feeling overwhelmed.
Praying with scriptures takes distractions away from you, it helps you stay focused in prayer. And that is another way of building a consistent prayer routine.
* Create A Prayer-Friendly Environment *
This may sound a bit left field, but to create a consistent prayer routine, you need just the right serene. With a quiet spot that can help you minimize or eliminate noise and distractions, you would find it easy to pray and return to the place of prayer frequently.
It doesn’t have to be a closet or a room that nobody can access.
The Bible in 1st Thessalonians 5:17 says we should “pray without ceasing”.
Even as you go about your daily activities, you can pray in your mind.
You can create this environment by using background worship music as you pray. Include natural sounds or soft lighting to set the mood. There are no restrictions on where and how you should pray.
* Try Different Prayer Methods *
This is probably one of the first things to do when you want to create a consistent prayer routine.
There is no one specific method of prayer, and what works for me might not work for you, hence, you need to explore different methods till you find your rhythm.
You can try daily morning prayer walks, where you walk around and pray. Creative prayer, like drawing or doodling, is another method you can explore to pray.
There are many Godly prayer podcasts, and you can ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to a specific podcast that aligns with your spirituality, and you can listen as a guide to pray.
* Ask the Holy Spirit for Help with Focus *
One thing to know when trying to create a consistent prayer routine is that you can’t do it on your own. If you rely on your strength and understanding, you will be frustrated.
It is important to acknowledge the importance of the Holy Spirit in helping you focus on the place of prayer and in life generally.
A simple prayer, “Holy Spirit, help me focus and connect with you.” It can go a long way in helping you eliminate distractions and stay focused.
Distractions are inevitable when praying. It’s one of the devil’s tricks to take you away from the place of prayer. However, when these distractions happen, just gently refocus and you will see that you can continue praying while remaining focused.
* Be Patient and Keep Showing Up *
Patience is important when creating a daily and consistent prayer routine.
Know that prayer is a journey to consistent fellowship with God.
It is not a performance. Distractions will present themselves, but don’t be discouraged, God hears every prayer, even distracted prayers.
Focus is not something you achieve in a one-off prayer session with God, focus improves with time and consistency. So be kind to yourself while on this journey to achieving consistency in prayer.
