Last Updated on 01/08/2026 by Nicky
Cleaning When You’re Low on Energy (Not Low on Standards)
If keeping your house clean feels harder than it should, it’s probably not because you’re lazy or doing something wrong.
Most days, you’re just juggling a lot like work (ugh), family (yay), errands (sigh). You know…life stuff. By the time you get home, the last thing you want to do is launch into a full cleaning routine or hunt down supplies just to wipe one counter.
You still care about your space. You just want cleaning to feel easier and more automatic instead of another thing that requires effort and planning.
That’s what this post is about.
These tired girl friendly cleaning hacks are designed for real life.
How do I know?
Because I’ve used them and my house is pretty dang “spotless”.
Not actually spotless, but clean enough to have company over in 30 minutes or less.
Instead of focusing on perfect routines or doing everything at once, these hacks help you:
- Keep clutter under control
- Make cleaning as convenient as possible
- Reduce how much thinking and moving around cleaning takes
A cleaner home doesn’t always come from working harder. Sometimes it comes from setting things up in a way that makes cleaning almost a no brainer.
If you like the idea of a home that stays mostly tidy with less effort, these hacks are for you so please keep reading.

Hack #1: Use Decorative Baskets to Hide Clutter (Especially Ones With Lids)
One of the easiest ways to make a space look cleaner is to deal with visual clutter, not the actual clutter.
That’s where decorative baskets come in.
Instead of trying to put everything away perfectly, you give clutter a designated place to land. Blankets, mail, chargers, random stuff that doesn’t belong anywhere specific. Toss it in the basket and move on. I have pretty, strategically-placed baskets and ottomans all over my house.
Baskets with lids like this one are especially helpful because they instantly make a room look tidy, even if the basket itself is full. You don’t have to sort anything. You don’t have to organize it. You just close the lid.
But if you find one without a lid, that works too.
The key is to place baskets where clutter already happens:
- Next to the couch
- By the stairs
- In the bedroom corner
- By the front door
- In the bathroom for hair tools or products
You get the idea, I hope.
Think of baskets as a visual reset button. The room looks calmer in seconds, and you didn’t have to clean. You just hid the chaos in a way that still looks intentional.
Hack #2: Let a Robot Vacuum Do the Work You Don’t Want to Do
Vacuuming is one of those tasks that you truly no longer have to do. I have two robot vacuums. One of my robot vacuums is a Shark vacuum and mop in one, which you can look at here.
And the other one is a vacuum that I got from Walmart from a brand I’ve never heard of (Tzumi) One is upstairs and one is downstairs. And I haven’t used a regular vacuum since.
So now, instead of thinking about when to vacuum, you schedule it. Daily or every other day. While you’re at work, resting, or doing something else entirely.
Or if you don’t schedule it, you can just program it to start whenever you want. I’ve done it plenty of times while I was eating dinner.
Is your floor going to be perfectly clean? Probably not. But it will be consistently cleaner than if vacuuming depended on your motivation.
You do have to move obvious obstacles but then you can let the vacuum handle the rest.
This works especially well if you pair it with the basket trick I mentioned earlier. Floors stay clearer, vacuuming becomes automatic, and your house looks more put-together with almost no effort.
Hack #3: Use Toilet Bowl Stamps to Cut Down on Bathroom Cleaning
Bathrooms get dirty fast, and toilets are usually the part no one wants to deal with…at least I don’t.
Toilet bowl stamps are a small change that make a big difference. You apply them once, and they help keep the toilet fresher between cleanings with every flush. If you don’t know what I mean by toilet bowl stamps then you can take a look at them here
But basically what it is, is gel toilet bowl cleaner that comes in a tube and you “stamp” to the side of the toilet bowl. The one I use from Dollar Tree keeps my toilet clean for weeks but it’s hard to find so you might have to get it from Amazon.
This doesn’t replace cleaning your toilet entirely, but it does reduce how often you need to scrub and how gross it feels when you finally do.
They’re especially helpful in:
- Guest bathrooms
- Shared bathrooms
- Bathrooms you don’t use every day
Less buildup means quicker cleanups later, which is exactly what tired girl cleaning is about.

Hack #4: Make Cleaning Supplies Look Like Home Decor
One reason cleaning feels annoying is that it usually starts with searching for supplies.
If the cleaner is under the sink, the wipes are in a closet, and the dish tablets are tucked away somewhere, that’s already too many steps and I want to give up before I even start.
A tired girl–friendly solution is to make your cleaning supplies part of your decor.
When your supplies look nice, you can leave them out. And when they’re already out, cleaning becomes easier to start.
Think:
- A simple, glass spray bottle on the counter like this one
- A decorative container holding wipes like this silver canister that I keep on my kitchen counter
- A glass or ceramic jar for dishwashing tablets like this one
When everything is visible and easy to grab, wiping something down becomes almost automatic. You see the cleaner, you spray, you’re done.
This works especially well in kitchens and bathrooms where quick cleanups make the biggest difference.
Hack #5: Use Pretty Cleaning Cloths You Actually Want to Use
If your cleaning cloths are stiff, stained, or ugly, you’re less likely to reach for them.
This might sound small, but switching to nicer cloths makes cleaning feel less like a chore and more like a quick reset.
Look for:
- Soft microfiber cloths like these
- Neutral or aesthetic colors
- Sets you don’t mind leaving out
You can even assign cloths by area. One for the kitchen, one for the bathroom, one for surfaces like coffee tables or nightstands.
When a cloth is already sitting out and looks decent, wiping something down doesn’t feel like a big deal. It’s just a quick swipe and you’re done.
Hack #6: Set Up Mini Cleaning Stations Instead of One Big Supply Closet
Running back and forth across the house to clean is exhausting, especially when you’re already low on energy.
Instead of one central stash of supplies, create mini cleaning stations in the rooms you use the most.
Each station only needs two things:
- One cleaner
- One cloth
That’s it. Or you could just use disinfecting wipes.
Put one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, and one in the main living area. When a surface needs attention, you don’t have to think or walk far. Everything you need is already there.
This cuts down on friction, which makes it more likely that small cleanups actually happen.
Or, if you don’t like that idea, you could just have an easy-to-carry cleaning caddy that you can take with you from room to room. The point is, make cleaning as easy as possible so that you’re more likely to do it.
Hack #7: Use the 5-Minute Reset (And Stop When Time Is Up)
Not every cleaning session needs to turn into a project.
Set a timer for five minutes and do whatever you can in that time. When the timer goes off, stop.
This works because:
- Five minutes feels manageable
- You’re more likely to start
- Progress still happens
Some days that might mean clearing a counter. Other days it might mean loading the dishwasher or picking up the living room. Now sometimes, when the timer goes off, I keep going, but you don’t have to.
If 5 minutes is all you can handle, then that’s totally cool.
You’re not aiming for perfect. You’re aiming for better than before.
Hack #8: Let Appliances Work Overnight
Anytime you can wake up to progress already made, cleaning feels less overwhelming.
Run the dishwasher at night. I think doing this saves on water and electricity costs as well, but don’t quote me on that.
Start a load of laundry before bed.
You don’t have to finish everything in one go. Even partially unloading or folding later is easier when the hard part is already done.
This is especially helpful on busy days when you know you won’t have energy later.
Hack #9: Lower the Standard on Purpose
This might be the most important hack of all.
A clean home doesn’t have to mean spotless. It just needs to feel livable and calm enough for you. All-or-nothing thinking is what will stop you from making progress. It has done that to me so many times, so I hope you will learn from my mistakes.
So if you do decide to learn from my mistakes, this might mean you:
- Hiding your clutter instead of organizing it
- Doing a quick wipe instead of a deep clean
- Letting something wait until tomorrow
When you stop aiming for perfect, cleaning becomes something you can actually keep up with.
Final Thoughts: Make Cleaning Work for You
The bottom line is this…You don’t need more discipline or motivation to keep your home clean. Okay, maybe motivation and discipline have something to do with it, but maybe not as much as you think.
Sometimes you just need cleaning tricks and tips that fit your energy, your schedule, and your real life.
Start with one hack and add others later if you want. Even small changes can make your home feel easier to manage without turning cleaning into a big deal.
A tired girl–friendly home isn’t about doing more.
It’s about setting things up so you can rest and relax and make your home feel more like a sanctuary
