But the truth is, even in the midst of all that chaos, God still desires to connect with you. We often make the mistake of thinking we need a perfect routine or a long amount of time to meet with God. That’s far from the truth. What God requires of you is connection.

With prayer journaling, you have the perfect platform and a direct channel to connect with God in 5-10 minutes a day. You can shut the noise and refocus your heart to enjoy God’s presence wherever you are.

In this post, we’ll explore how to create a 5-10 minute prayer journaling routine when life is too chaotic and you need to experience God’s presence like never before. Without further ado, let’s dive in!

When you have a routine, it creates a sense of calm and helps you stay focused while you build a thriving spiritual rhythm.

Prayer journaling helps you build a deep connection with God because it serves as a record of the conversations you’ve had with him. If you have a faulty memory like I do, then these recorded prayers are invaluable.

Another special trait of a prayer journaling routine is that it helps provide clarity when your mind and life feel all over the place and scattered beyond your control.

You might be wondering, what are these signs? Well, sometimes you feel so overwhelmed before your day even begins, it’s probably a call for fellowship from God.

Another sign is that you just miss hearing from Him, and your spirit becomes a little bit restless. God is calling you to journal. Other times it could just be that your mind won’t settle, while at times, you could just feel like you’re running on an empty battery spiritually.

These are not exhaustive signs, as there could be more signs that you’re craving a spiritual routine.

Choose a consistent time: Don’t make the mistake of thinking you need a perfect time; it doesn’t have to be perfect. Just choose a time that works for you; it could be morning, lunchtime, evening, or late night. Choose a time you can keep up with.

Keep your journal and pen in a visible and accessible spot: One of the key elements of journaling is having a journal and a pen. With your pen and paper easily accessible, you can start a simple faith routine for busy women. Whenever you set your eyes on your journal, you can pen down a prayer.

Pair it with an existing habit: This is very important because creating a new schedule just for prayer journaling can be quite hard to adapt to, but pairing it with an existing habit makes it more seamless.

You can pair your prayer journaling time with your coffee break, your lunch break, or even your winding-down time.

Keep it short: One of the biggest hurdles to starting a prayer journaling routine is thinking that it has to be long. But that’s not true. You can start your prayer journaling routine with just 5-10 minutes.

This is probably the key to prayer journaling for overwhelmed women like us. Sometimes when I think about trying to prayer journal for longer than 20 minutes, it seems to be too much, and I’m a writer! So then I just won’t start at all, if it seems too overwhelming.

So don’t start with a longer time. It can make you give up even before you start. You can start from 5-10 minutes and increase the time slowly until you have a routine that works for you.

Let go of perfection: Journaling is between you and God. There’s no A+ or A- grading system involved. It’s just you communicating with God…not having the perfect words or grammar.

When you let go of perfection, building a prayer journaling habit is genuine and easy.

Open your prayer journal and write what’s on your heart: Like I mentioned earlier, I like using my digital Bible and prayer journal that I created in Trello.

You could write one or two sentences if that’s all you have time for. But if you have time, you could write paragraphs and pages, if that is what your heart needs to do.

Just know that starting with something, even if it’s 1 or 2 lines, is better than not doing it at all. There have been some periods in my life when all I would say is “Lord, help me. I’m not doing well. Help me”. And that would be my prayer. But trust me when I say I meant that short prayer with my whole chest. You can write in your journal for 3-4 minutes and say a whole lot, trust me.

Read a scripture: As Christians, scripture is a core part of who we are. So reading a short scripture or even a single verse is a good way to start. I get Bible verse notifications on my phone and I also get devotionals sent to my email. So you can read one of those in 5 minutes or less.

You can then wrap it up your session with one or two minutes of meditation.

If you follow these tips and remain consistent, you’re definitely going to see your life change and your faith in Christ grow stronger!

Here are a few ideas you can leverage to keep things fresh:

Have weekly scripture-based themes, such as wisdom, hope, peace, or trust. There are many scripture-based themes you can leverage to keep things fresh.

You can also use journal prompts like the ones I wrote in these posts:

You can also journal one verse daily, meditate on it, and apply the lessons personally to your life.

I know that when you commit to something and deviate once, guilt can overwhelm you, and that’s normal. However, don’t let the guilt get the better of you.

So, you miss one day. Don’t let the guilt weigh you down and stop you from continuing to journal. When you feel guilty, pick yourself back up without shame and remember that you’re not doing it to impress, but to build a habit and have fellowship with God.

It also doesn’t have to be a daily ritual. You can make it twice or three times a week. Remember, God is not interested in the volume but in sincerity and consistency. Consistency helps you build a connection and remain at peace with God.

You can start your simple faith routine tomorrow morning with as little as 5 minutes; it doesn’t really matter how long.
