How Prayer Journaling Creates Peace in Your Day When Life Feels Heavy

Sometimes the weight of all of your responsibilities and worries can be overwhelming. The concept of peace may even feel like a distant dream, with all of the silent battles you have to fight alone.

As women, sometimes we try to handle too much alone, physically, spiritually, mentally and even emotionally. We try to stay strong for everyone even though deep down, we feel weak.

But it is important to note that God’s peace is a gift. Like the scripture assures us in Philippians 4:6-7, when you bring everything to God in prayer, his peace that supersedes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus

Peace is not something you have to manufacture; it is something you can access in Christ. Bring it all to God, in your prayer journal. That’s how to feel spiritually calm even amidst all the chaos.

The sooner we realize that we cannot do it on our own, the better. Total surrender to God is one way of inviting peace into your life.

And what better way of showing your total surrender than journaling? Writing prayers helps us release burdens, and it gives us a different perspective. It helps us pace ourselves to God’s pace such that we’re slow enough to hear him talk. This personally is hard for me to do but when I do, it’s so rewarding.

Journaling is a two-way interaction. You journal all your burdens through your pen and journal, while you also pay attention to hear what God has to say.

Prayer journaling gives us peace as it helps us filter all anxious thoughts through the lens of the scripture. Peace through prayer journaling is one of the best gifts you can receive from God, as it provides a sense of calm and comfort that is second to none.

Your heart will inevitably feel burdened at some point, and at that time, words might be hard to find. It is at these times that journaling becomes prominent; it becomes a refuge, a safe place where you can release whatever weight you’re carrying.

There is no right or wrong way to write in a prayer journal. Just write what’s on your heart. It might be easy for someone, while for others, it is not so easy.

One key to Christian journaling for stress is authenticity. Your grammar doesn’t have to be perfect. All you need is honesty.

You can start simple with a prompt that opens your heart to God’s presence like this:

Lord, take this away, I can’t carry it anymore.

Lord, prove yourself in my life.

Dear Father, I’m overwhelmed, come to my rescue

God, remind me who you are today

Dear Lord, reveal to me just one way you’re still working in this

You can also write scriptures like Isaiah 41:10, which says, “Do not fear, for I am with you” This can anchor your prayer journaling and let you express yourself fully without restriction.

You can write one line a day, you can make it a paragraph another day, and you could use multiple pages on other days. There is no template; God listens either way, and he always comes through.

And peace doesn’t mean you have fixed everything. Remember that journaling is not necessarily about productivity; it is about the presence of God, the fellowship you enjoy with Him.

You’re not journaling to solve problems, yes, you can get the comfort and calm you need while also gaining insight on how to tackle a particular problem.

But, journaling is primarily for clarity, expression, realigning with yourself and your current reality to God’s truth and peace.

Like I have said multiple times before, there’s no set-in-stone approach to making prayer journaling a peaceful part of your day. However, there are certain things you can do to make prayer journaling a peaceful part of your life.

Create a quiet space in your house for journaling. It could be your room or the closest to it. Don’t overthink this. It doesn’t have to be a perfect setup. As long as you can connect with God there, it is perfect.

Have a dedicated pen and journal nearby. There is no journaling without these fundamental tools. You can start from a regular journal and build these habits before your progress.

Choose a scripture and write a prayer. There is no better guide than the Word of God; leverage your Bible.

Aim for consistency, not perfection. God knows you; you don’t have to feign perfection with Him. He cherishes consistency. Perfection may never come, but the key thing is consistency.

We’ve spoken about many things already, but the truth is, you don’t need a perfect scenario to enjoy peace.

You don’t have to wait for the right or perfect moment. You don’t even need a quiet house to find peace.

Writing one sincere and genuine paragraph in your journal tonight, before you go to bed or the first thing tomorrow morning, can shift your mind and heart to bring comfort and calmness to your mind.

You don’t need the right words to do your prayer journaling perfectly; it is about consistency, showing up with an open heart, and surrendering all to God.
