How To Trust God With Your Finances When The Money Math Ain’t Mathing
Let’s get really honest here. Trusting God with your money is really scary. It’s scary to me for several reasons. Number 1, what does it even mean to trust God with your money, and what does it require me to do?
As someone who is very literal, I don’t do well with vague statements like “honoring God with your money” because I don’t fully understand how to apply that to my life in practical terms.
And then, if you are someone who lives paycheck to paycheck, how frightening is it to even consider trusting God with your money when you don’t know what that trust entails?
I’m going to give you my honest opinion on what trusting God with your money means, why it can be such a struggle, and some concrete tips on how to wrap your head around these concepts and apply them to your life.
But I’m going to be honest. I have not mastered any of this myself.
I can know all day long what I should do and even advise other people on what they should do, but that doesn’t mean I’m doing it perfectly myself.
So trust me when I say there is no judgment here whatsoever. I hope this post will help you in your quest to honor the Lord, but I know it’s a work in progress for sure.
So whatever you do, don’t stress about anything I’m about to say.

* What Does It Even Mean To Trust God With Your Money *
So, what does it even mean to trust God with your money? That’s a very good question. Everyone will have a different answer for this, but this is what it means to me.
To trust God with your money means that you may have to do scary things with your money. Things you don’t want to do. Things that require a high amount of trust and faith. Things where you don’t know the outcome.
Okay, so what do I mean by this? Well, let’s use this as an example.
I have my contribution to my church automatically debited from my checking account every week.
I thought I was giving quite a bit. But then I did the math (well, Chat GPT did the math) and I realized that in order for me to truly tithe, I would need to more than double the amount that I currently give.
I can’t lie. I felt some type of way about that.
The thought of doing that is scary to me. I’m not sure I’m ready to do that or not. So that’s when I have to ask myself the hard question, “Do I really trust God with my money?” This is a question I’ve been talking to God about ever since I had this revelation.
“Do I trust You enough to give that extra money every month and have faith that You will still provide everything I need”? I honestly don’t have the answer to that yet.
I know I want the answer to be yes, and it should be yes, but is it yes yet? No, not necessarily. The thought of more than doubling my contribution is well…scary to me.
Hopefully, this example illustrates what I mean by trusting God with your money can be a struggle. So what do we do about this struggle?

Well, understanding biblical principles on finances is the key to managing finances and learning to trust God with your money. (source)
Knowing what God says about money builds a solid foundation of understanding how we should spend our money.
And once you know what God says about managing our money, it becomes less scary over time.
Why? Because what God says about money is just practical and reasonable advice (source).
The Bible is filled with wisdom on how to keep God first in our financial decisions, from practicing wise stewardship to giving generously.
If you are struggling with financial stress, this post might freak you out, but don’t let it. Just take one or two ideas and implement them into your life. Start small so you don’t get overwhelmed.
When you put God first, give generously, and add a bit (or a lot) of financial literacy to manage your resources wisely, you can begin to experience peace and purpose on your financial journey, even when you’re scared to death.
Let’s explore some practical ways to trust God with your money and put your trust in him for your financial future.
* Why Trusting God with Your Money Matters *
Trusting God with your money is important because it shows God that you are grateful for how he has blessed you and that you want to use money in a way that furthers His kingdom.
Money is a tool that is neither good nor bad. When we honor God with our money, we can show Him that we want to use this tool for good things like helping the poor and giving to your local church.
Money reflects people’s priorities and values and God wants to know if you care about money more than him.
If you don’t honor or trust God with your money, he might be cautious of what he blesses you with because you haven’t been able to manage his resources properly.
God cares about how we manage money because he seeks people to manage his resources here on earth, as faithfulness in finance leads to greater responsibility.
* How To Put God First in Your Finances (Especially When It’s Scary) *
I’ve already mentioned that trusting God with your financial future can be scary due to uncertainty.
So how do we deal with that? I’m still working on this concept myself, but I think it is good to start like this:
Tell God your fears, acknowledge the financial uncertainty you feel, but remember his promises of provision.
The best way I know how to do this is by prayer journaling, which I talk about more here.
He says in Philippians 4:19 says “My God will supply all your needs.”.
Do we believe this or not?
Ya’ll, putting God first in your finances is about trusting him and seeking his wisdom and guidance before making any major financial decision.
As important as money seems now, we have to understand that money is just a temporary commodity while God’s faithfulness lasts forever.
When you seek to put God first and allow him to make the decisions for your finances, fear will try to grip you. But financial decisions need to be based on faith, not fear.
So learn to give even when it feels risky, trust God’s provision rather than hoarding, and don’t allow financial worries to control you. Easier said than done, I know.
Practical Tip: Increase your charitable giving or contribution by just $5 per week. Slowly increase it over time. Make the contribution automatic so that you don’t have to remember to give because for many of us, that’s a recipe for failure.

Tithing in the Bible is about giving a tenth of your income. It is a way of acknowledging that everything belongs to God.
But when we are on the struggle bus financially, it can be hard to consider giving money to church or a charity. Do we really have to give when we feel like we don’t have any money to give?
Based on my careful study of the scriptures, God loves a cheerful giver and is pleased when we give. Do we have to give? No, of course not.
We don’t have to do anything God tells us to do. However, does God love it when we do? Yes, absolutely. That alone is enough to make me want to do it, even when it’s difficult to do. I talk more about giving and tithing in this post here.
At the end of the day, the amount we give doesn’t really matter; it is the heart of giving that matters. So, the answer the question point blank, in my opinion, we don’t have to tithe, but it is certainly an amazing goal to have.
And we should definitely give something back to God and to those in need, even if we live paycheck to paycheck

* How To Manage Money Wisely To Honor God *
To manage money wisely, you need to first acknowledge that you are just a steward of the money and it all belongs to God. Managing money wisely is about learning to be faithful and prudent with your spending.
It’s about being content with what you have rather than chasing vain wealth. There is nothing wrong with wealth, but we shouldn’t chase it either or get our self-worth from it.
Planning and budgeting are important in honoring God.
Also, using your money to further the gospel is a good way of managing money wisely.
Avoiding debt as much as possible is also another way of honoring God and managing money wisely. Debt can become a form of bondage as it says in Proverbs 22:7. This bondage can take your focus away from God. You can ask God for help to eliminate debt by saying these prayers that I have in this post!
Always ensure to seek God’s guidance before you commit to any financial decision.
Saving and preparing for the future while trusting God for provision is also key to managing money and honoring God.
* Living a Life of Financial Contentment *
Living a life of financial contentment does not mean you have to sell all of your possessions and go live on a commune. It just means that you recognize that God is your ultimate provider and you are not anxious about money, but rely on His faithfulness.
When we talk about financial contentment, it is important to note that provision is not about abundance but about sufficiency.
Practice gratitude for what God has already given you rather than comparing yourself with others because of materialism.
Just like in Matthew 6:19-21, living a life of financial contentment is about focusing on heavenly treasures rather than earthly riches.
You can adopt a minimalist and purpose-driven mindset that places faith over financial status.
* What Does Trusting God With Your Money Mean To You*
In summary, trusting God with your money is not about taking all your money to church and living on pennies. It is also not necessarily about tithing or church donations.
It is about recognizing that God has our interests at heart and is willing and ready to provide all that we need. And giving some of that money back to him, even when we are scared.
Trusting God with your money is about acknowledging that you are a steward of God’s resources, however many they are, and harnessing those resources to glorify him and further his kingdom with your money.
On your own, you might struggle with this concept; fear will always creep in, but faith is a muscle. The more you exercise this faith muscle in the form of giving to the Lord and to those in need, the stronger that muscle will become.
Remember to always ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to help you manage God’s finances the right way.
I personally use my digital prayer and Bible journal to express my fears, doubts, and concerns about all things financial. You can get a copy of the same prayer journal I use by clicking here, if you’re interested!
