I can’t lie…
I got emotional while I was creating this grief journal and I’m not even grieving the loss of a loved one.
That’s how powerful these prompts are.
I looked them over and it tore me up thinking about how I might need these prompts one day when I experience the pain of loss.
If you or someone you know is grieving, I truly believe that journaling is an activity that will help them heal.
That is why I created this journal…to help people heal in a healthy way.
You see what many of us want to do when we are wheeling from losing a loved one is bury the pain.
Maybe then the pain will go away.
Maybe then you won’t hurt so bad.
But let me tell you.
That don’t work.
When you are confronted with the pain of a searing loss you will deal with that pain one way or another.
It will either be in a healthy way or an unhealthy way.
What are some examples of unhealthy ways to grieve?
Some unhealthy ways to grieve would be to:
- Act like your okay when your not
- Eat too much
- Become promiscuous
- Start using drugs
- Withdraw from loved ones
- Become attached to inanimate objects (hoarding)
- Lose your faith
- Drink too much
- Take dangerous risks
If you’ve done any of these things to try and cope with what you’re going through, please know that I’m not judging you.
Since you’re here, you’re showing that you want to take steps to heal in the right way…so what are some healthy ways to grieve?
What are some examples of healthy ways to grieve?
Healthy ways to grieve would include:
- Crying and not burying your emotions even when they scare you.
- Talking to a counselor (either online or in person like I talk about in this blog post)
- Talking to people you love
- And of course journaling.
Why Is Journaling A Healthy Way To Grieve?
There are many reasons why journaling can help you in this season of pain that you’re in but I will just name two
1)You Get Out of Your Own Head
You get to take all of the swirling thoughts out of your head and onto paper.
Your head might be spinning at a dizzying speed with sadness.
When you journal, you let the paper bear the burden of all those thoughts.
2)You’re facing your grief bravely
You’re facing your fears, hurts, and trauma head-on.
If someone asks you how you are, you might say you are fine when you’re really not.
But with a journal, you get the say exactly what you really feel.
You don’t have to pretend, play nice, be polite, or avoid your feelings.
When you hold it all in, you might explode one day (emotionally and mentally).
But when you journal, you aren’t letting those emotions build up inside you.
There are all kinds of grief that we endure- not just the death of a loved one
And this is not just for people who have lost someone due to death.
You could be grieving the death of a relationship.
The death of a dream.
The death of a beloved pet or support animal.
There are all kinds of losses that we face in this life.
These grief journal prompts will help you dig deeper into your feelings and make you brave enough to meet the emotional challenges that lie ahead.
