The “Secret” To Losing Weight

I don’t want to be the one to tell you this but it’s important that you know this.

There is no secret to losing weight.  No intermittent fasting or magic diet. No restricting my favorite foods or trips to the Mayo Clinic.

There is no magic bullet. No code to crack. I know we all wish there was an easier way to do it but it really boils down to this.

In its simplest most foundational form, weight loss is about eating healthier and moving more (ie exercise).

I wish that weight loss was somehow harder than that to understand because then we could justify why it’s so hard for us to do it but it really is that simple.

How To Lose 65 Pounds

We have to change how much we move and how much we eat and in many cases what we eat.

Under the broad umbrella of changing what and how much we eat and how much we move, there are many different ways to eat healthily and move.

This might be where the confusion is.

It’s like yeah yeah we know that we have to move more and eat less but which movements lead to the best and fastest results and which foods lead to the fastest results.

And how can we still eat at least some of the foods that we like and lose weight so that we don’t go insane?

I think these are the real questions we are asking when we ask how do we lose weight.

With as many news segments and doctor’s shows and books, and online articles as there are on weight loss, how can we possibly not know how to lose weight?

Many of us do know how, we just:

a) don’t like the answer

or

b) accept the answer through gritted teeth and then look for the best and least painful ways to move more and eat less.

So as much as we seek a new answer to the age-old question, how do you lose weight, there’s really only one main answer with a bunch of smaller sub-answers, if you know what I mean.

So How Did I Lose 65 Pounds & Counting? 3 Key Changes That Helped Me Lose 65 Pounds

Besides the big umbrella answer of I moved more and ate less, here are some of the brief details of what I’ve done so far to lose weight.

Update: Now, keep in mind that even though at one point I had lost 65 pounds, I forgot to be consistent with these changes, and I started gaining some of the weight back.

This constant forgetting of what works and what doesn’t is just one of the many ADHD symptoms that I struggle with EVERY day, in every area of my life.

I am undiagnosed but whether I have ADHD or not, I have every ADHD symptom under the sun and it affects my weight loss journey just like any other part of my life.

So while I know first-hand these tips work, in the spirit of transparency, just know that I am still a work in progress. Okay, now we can commence with the tips that I used to lose 65 pounds at one point in my life and am currently using now.

1. I cut my portions down little by little

I can’t believe I’m going to admit this but here goes. I remember I used to get a carryout from an all you can eat buffet place.

I stuffed those boxes as full as I could. And I was only able to get 2 meals out of those boxes even though they contained at least 4 servings if not more.

Now that I look back on it, it sickens me that I did that to my body which is supposed to be a temple. Plus I couldn’t even begin to eat that much today.

That’s because I started to slowly cut back on how much I was eating.

I started measuring and sometimes weighing how much I was getting.

Or sometimes, if I was feeling lazy, I would just put the normal amount on my plate and then I would put 1 or two spoonfuls back (sometimes more).

Trust me, these changes add up for sure.

2. I ate cleaner higher quality foods

What you eat, as in the quality of what you eat makes a difference. One of my favorite books on nutrition and weight loss is the French Don’t Diet book by Dr. Clower.

This book was written before clean eating was a big deal like it is now. Although it is still a little different from the clean eating revolution it has many of the same concepts.

We should eat actual food. Whole healthy foods and not food products (meaning packaged foods with lots of hard-to-say ingredients). This made a huge difference not just with my weight but also with how I felt in general.

Some of the additives in our foods make you addicted to food while providing no nutritional value.

So you wind up eating a lot but you’re still not satisfied because your body still wants more nutrients.

The premise behind the book is that when you eat cleaner and more whole foods you don’t get as hunger because your body is satisfied with less.

I’ve definitely found this to be true and I totally recommend this book. It makes me happy to know that I can eat chocolate, full-fat dairy, ice cream and bread and still lose weight.

You don’t have to totally restrict yourself from your favorite foods. Just try and choose foods that are less processed when possible. And being mindful of your daily calorie consumption has also been helpful for me.

3. Strength training & Walking For The Win

Man oh man did I used to run on the treadmill. When I had a Y membership, sometimes I would be on that thing for an hour.

Guess what? I lost no weight. None. Now granted, my eating habits didn’t change as much as they should have but still, I saw no change in my body.

But when I do weight lifting, Pilates. or any resistance training on the regular, I definitely see changes in my body and fast.

There ain’t nothing like strength training to lose weight fast. It’s pretty amazing when you can start to feel your core tighten and your legs getting stronger.

With that being said, I still definitely recommend these walking workout DVDs because they did help me lose 50 pounds.

So it’s not that walking can’t help you lose weight but for me, walking alone wasn’t enough.

These are truly some things that helped me lose 65 pounds and keep it off.

And keep reading because below I will share some free weight loss tools that can help you lose weight too!

Conclusion To My Top 3 Tips For Losing Over 65 Pounds Without Depriving Myself

Once again, no secret code or anything like that.

It’s just a matter of finding what works for you.

These are the tips that have worked for me thus far but I’m going to sure share more about my weight loss journey because there’s definitely more to it than just 3 tips.
