8 Amazing Benefit Of Bible Study

Have you ever felt like studying the Bible was just a task to be endured and checked off your to-do list? There are some Christians who have never felt this I’m sure but I’m sad to say that I am not one of them.

Setting aside time to study the Bible can frankly seem like an interruption to our busy day. Because what we are doing instead (you know scrolling through Facebook or Instagram) is so much more important. I hope you are familiar with sarcasm.

If not, then you might not have realized that I do not believe catching up on Facebook “news” is more important than reading the word of God. It’s just that it’s easy to get caught up in everyday life and seemingly not have any time to spend with the Lord.

If you’ve ever felt this way, then I sit back as I share with you 10 reasons why studying the Bible is awesome and vital to our relationship with the Lord!

Oh yeah, and this post contains affiliate links to great products that will help you in your health journey. I will get a commission if you decide to buy from these links. Please let me know if you have any questions.

What is Bible Study?

So what is Bible study? Bible study is the process of discovering the truth of God’s word through careful and intentional research and thought. It is a practice that can transform your perspective on life as you seek to learn more about God and what He has to say.

You see, when you study the Bible, you’ll start to realize how such an ancient text can apply to your modern daily life. It’s easy to say that the Bible is old and not relevant to my life today. But the God of the Bible is just as alive now as he was 2,000 years ago.

The more you study the words of the creator of the universe the more you will be equipped to make wise decisions.

As you study the Bible, you will discover that its pages hold the answers to life’s greatest questions and the keys to changing your whole life. And we will get into different kinds of Bible study a little bit later but I first want to share with you why reading the Bible benefits your life in amazing ways!

– What Bible Study Means To Me

Before we discuss the benefits of Bible study, let’s make a distinction. Reading the word of God is different from studying the word of God.

Both are important because before you start studying the Bible, you have to read it. And we have to know what the Bible says so we don’t fall for false doctrine (more on that later).

In this world where people are twisting scripture to fit their own agendas, it is imperative for us to read reliable versions of the Bible so that at the bare minimum we know what it says. But studying the Bible is different from reading it because studying requires a bigger time commitment and a bigger brain commitment.

It’s easy for me, someone who has been a Christian my whole adult life, to read familiar passages and gloss right over them. “I already know that verse”, I say to myself.

But I’ve really forced myself to slow down, read a passage several times, think about what it’s really saying, check to see if I really understand what’s happening in that passage, and then research it when I want more explanation.

I like taking notes in my Bible journal when I have questions or new insights have been revealed to me.

I hope that sharing a little more about how I do my Bible study and highlighting the differences between it and Bible reading has helped you understand it better! Now let’s discuss 7 reasons why Bible study is awesome!

Tools To Make Bible Study Easier

Of course, you can jump right into a Bible study routine if you feel equipped to do so but you might want a few tools to guide you. My favorite Bible study tool is one that I created in a free app called Trello.

It’s a digital Bible Study & Prayer Journal and I love it because it’s made my studies so much more personal and meaningful! I set it up where each book of the Bible has its own separate journal.

And then every journal has sections like where is Jesús in this book, topics to research, key points to remember, life application journal, and more!

What Are The Benefits Of Bible Study & Reading God’s Word?

1) Bible Study Strengthens Your Faith

One of the biggest benefits of studying the Bible is how it grows your faith in the one who inspired it. No this doesn’t happen with everyone who studies the Bible.

There have been many cases of people who set out to prove that the Bible wasn’t true. Then after careful study and research, they wound up being some of the most faith-filled Christians you’d ever want to meet!

That’s because the more you read about the Bible, the more you realize that it couldn’t have been written solely by man without any inspiration from a higher power (I talk about this more in this chilling Bible truths post).

And then, as you continue to study, you will gain a better understanding of God’s character, promises, and love for you. Plus, you will be better equipped to face life’s challenges with His help.

2) Increased Understanding of God’s Plan for Your Life

Bible study can help you to uncover God’s plan for your life which makes sense because this is how God speaks to us, right? I mean, I don’t get audible messages from the Lord but I do get personal messages from Him through His word. And one of the most important messages you can get from the Lord is what His plans for you are.

I personally believe that God has a universal plan for everyone and then a personal plan. The universal plan is for everyone to be a follower of His son, Jesus Christ, and glorify Him with our lives.

And the personal plan is the specific ways in which we glorify Him in our personal lives. The Bible talks about using our spiritual gifts and talents for the glory of God and His kingdom.

For instance, I believe that I am using my talents and gifts through this blog. I’m able to use my talents and gifts to glorify God to anyone who reads my posts or sees my content online! I encourage you to use your awesome gifts for God’s glory if you aren’t already.

I used to be super scared to put myself online even though I felt like God was calling me to do so. You can read this post about procrastination to know the steps I took to overcome my fears!

3) Bible study helps you to know God’s nature and grow closer to Him

If the creator of the universe wrote a book, wouldn’t you want to read it? Wouldn’t you want to know what He had to say and tell us? Would you not be curious to know what He was like? That’s the wonderful privilege you get when you read the Bible!

And to be able to have a relationship with Him through His son Jesus? How amazing is that!? But if you want to have a relationship with God and know more about Him, you have to read and study His word.

And over time reading the word of God can transform your life, and give you the strength and wisdom to face life’s challenges with God’s help. Plus studying the Bible is the best way to hear and heed God’s voice.

This can help you to recognize and understand God’s plan for your life, and it can give you the strength and wisdom to follow His leading.

This can help you to discover your purpose and call in life, and it can give you the confidence to pursue your dreams and goals with God’s help. You see, Bible study has like a domino effect on your life in an amazing way!

4) Bible study gives us the strength, wisdom, and guidance to face life’s challenges

And to piggyback on the last point, if you have a personal relationship with the creator of the universe, think of how richly that will bless your life.

I’m not saying that you read the Bible or have a relationship with Jesus based on what you can get out of it. But as a by-product, following the wisdom inherent in the Bible can save you so much heartache and pain.

Just thinking about the scripture “be slow to anger ” alone could save you from a world of issues. Think about the news stories you hear every day. The stories of road rage that end in someone’s death and all the lives ruined because of it.

But if we were slow to anger and thought first of the consequences of our actions, we might make better and wiser decisions more often.

And knowing which wise decisions to make comes from studying the word of God! Let’s take the book of Proverbs and all of the wisdom in that book. One of the best ways to absorb the wisdom in this book (and really the whole Bible) is to take notes in a Bible study journal and really apply them to your life.

Think about the tough situations you’re facing now. Are you struggling financially? Proverbs has so much to say about money and wealth and being a good steward of your money. If you go to

Proverbs 12:11 (NIV) which says:

“Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” and you start applying this principle to your life think about the difference it could make.

Copy this verse into your Bible study journal like this one about Proverbs or write it down. Then dissect this verse to see how it can apply to your life.  The more you study this verse, the more you might realize that saving and investing is something you need to start doing!

As you study God’s word, you will likely begin to understand the truths and principles that are revealed in His word and apply them to your life!

5) So We Can’t Be Tricked

Another benefit of Bible study? When you know what the word of God says, you can’t be easily misled into believing something that isn’t true.

The Bible tells us that there will be false teachers. What does this mean? That means that some of the celebrity pastors and authors that we love so much might be a false teachers.

I know we don’t ever like to consider this. I certainly don’t because when I find a Christian with a platform that speaks to me, I want their words to be true.

But I have to be willing to compare what they are teaching to what God teaches and make sure there aren’t any conflicts. With an open mind and an honest heart, we will be able to discern which teachings are true and which ones are not.

And then we won’t be tricked into believing false doctrine.

6) So We Can Help Others Understand The Word

One of the most important reasons to study the Bible is so that we can help others understand it. It can be daunting to pick up the Bible and just start reading it. I mean what if you wind up in Ezekiel as a Bible study beginner?

Ummm, you’re going to need a little help understanding it more than likely. So it’s important for us to study the Bible so we could be someone who could explain different passages of the Bible to other people.

Sure many parts of the Bible might go over my head…we aren’t going to understand everything that the word of God is saying. But we can have a good foundation of biblical knowledge so that we can illuminate the word for someone else.

7) So We Can See How God Loves Imperfect People

One of the things that I love most about the Bible is how real it is. The heroes of the Bible do not have any of their flaws hidden or excused.

Noah got drunk. Moses got angry and lost access to the promised land. Judah was a hot mess. Comforts me to know that these people were not even close to perfect and yet God still forgave them and loved them.

Reading about their sins in such embarrassing detail is a relief in a way because it shows that if God can love them, He can also love a screw-up like me.

8) So We Can Learn From The Mistakes Of Others (Biblical Heros)

Not only do the mistakes and character flaws of biblical heroes help me see the heart of God but they also teach important life lessons. I believe a big part of being wise is not only learning from your own mistakes but also learning from the mistakes of others.

And the characters in the Bible give us plenty of mistakes to learn from! From the very beginning, we learn from Adam and Eve that changing the words of God is not a great idea and has the gravest of consequences.

It can be very easy to put words in God’s mouth since He won’t directly descend from heaven and come correct you. But when we change the words, intent, and meaning of God’s word, it can send us on a path that we don’t want to be on.
