Giving It To God: How To Give Up Control And Trust God
I won’t even lie to you. Giving “it” to God is one of the scariest aspects of being a Christian for me.
I hate being vulnerable, giving up control, surrendering…whatever you want to call it. It’s not my thing. I’d much prefer just being anxious all the time and trying to figure it all out myself. And I seriously wish I was joking, but I’m not.
I’m just keeping it real with you. And it’s highly possible that you feel the same way if you’re reading this!.
I want you to know that you’re not alone…not in the least bit. However, I have learned after many sleepless nights, many spiritual battles, and “wars” with God (“war” is in quotes because really…what kind of war would I really have with God?”) that surrendering to God is really the best option even if I go kicking and screaming as I do it.
Again, I wish I were more compliant, but it goes against my nature.
I’m so grateful, though, that I serve a God that is abundantly patient and kind with me and loves and blesses me despite how difficult I can be to deal with.
I hope that the tips I’m going to share with you today will help you learn to give it to God even if it terrifies you because, at the end of the day, it is the best thing that you can do!

– What Is The “It” We Are Referring To
Giving “it” to God could be a situation, circumstance, or event that has you feeling stressed, anxious, or worried.
Sometimes these challenges could come as:
- Facing a difficult diagnosis
- Going through a difficult relationship
- Dealing with a difficult situation at work
- Experiencing financial difficulties
- Going through a difficult breakup or divorce
- Losing a job
- Experiencing a death in the family
- Dealing with a chronic illness
- Going through a traumatic event like sexual assault
These are just a few examples, but whatever “it” is for you, know that you can give it to God.
– Why We Should Give “It” To God
When we are faced with something that seems insurmountable, it is often our first instinct to try to take care of it ourselves. You know that feeling of being in charge, right? I outrightly tell myself, “yes, it’s a challenge, but I can handle it.”
In fact, I used to think that if I just worked a little harder or came up with the perfect solution, everything would work out fine.
How unreal that was!
I’ve learned my lesson the hard way over time, and I’m glad God is helping me to trust Him daily for His guidance and provisions.
I remember an instance when I told God I was struggling and I needed Him to come through for me. It took me several weeks of trial and error before I could hand it over to God.
But finally, with tears in my eyes, I knelt down and said, “Lord, if you don’t help me, I’ll be sunk in the challenge. Forgive my attitude, and please help me.”
After making this simple confession, I’ll never forget the peace that flooded my heart.
Oh! How God loves us.
Friends, when we surrender our lives to God, we acknowledge that He is in control and trust Him to take care of us.
Quit struggling and let God work!

– How To Surrender To God (Even When It Scares You)
There’s something about giving up control that can be really scary.
Whether it’s relinquishing control of our lives to God or simply surrendering to the present moment, it can feel like we’re handing over the steering wheel to someone else.
And yet, surrendering to the Holy Spirit is totally what we need to do in order to find true peace and happiness. It’s not easy, but it is worth it.
– 7 tips on how to give God your life, even when it scares you:
1) Prayer & Meditation
If you are struggling to surrender your problem to God, consider praying or meditating on it. Spend some time alone in silence, focusing on your breath and clearing your mind. Then, once you feel more calm and centered, begin to pray or meditate.
For example, if you are struggling with anxiety, you may want to pray or meditate on what the Bible says like Philippians 4:6-7, which states:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
As you pray or meditate on verses like this, allow yourself to surrender your anxiety to God. Visualize letting God handle and take away your anxiety while He fills you with His peace. Trust that He is in control and that He will help you through this tough time.
How to pray: “Dear God, I surrender control of my life to you. I don’t know what the right decision is, but I trust that you do. Please guide me and show me the way. Amen.”
2) Prayer Journaling
First, find a quiet space where you can be alone with your thoughts. Then, start by writing down anything and everything that is on your mind- no matter how big or small it may seem.
Once you have emptied your mind onto the paper, take a step back and assess what is really bothering you.
After you have pinpointed the root of your problem, it is time to start journaling about how you can surrender this problem to God. I can’t recommend prayer journaling enough. I attribute so much of my spiritual growth to this practice and I believe it will help you too!
Think about how turning this problem over to God can help you achieve peace in your life. Write down all of the positive things that could come from surrendering your issue to God.
For example, if you are struggling with anxiety, journaling about how God can help you find peace may look like this:
Dear God,
I am feeling so anxious and stressed about ________. I know that I can’t do this on my own, and I need Your help. I surrender this worry to You and ask that You help me find peace. Thank You for being here for me and helping me through this tough time. Amen.
3) Write Down Reminders Of When You Trusted God
I’ve had times in my life when I felt like everything was falling apart. I was struggling just to keep my head above the water because it felt like all hell had broken loose.
Have you had a similar experience?
In moments like this, it can be hard to remember that God is still with you. But even when you can’t feel His presence, He is still there.
Even right now, I believe God is using me to remind you again that:
1. You are never alone
2. He is always with you
3. He loves you unconditionally
4. Surrendering to Him is not giving up, it’s trusting Him
5. Let go, and let Him
6. You are not alone in your struggle.
7. He is with you, even when you can’t feel His presence.
4) Scriptures That Help You Remember
Have you ever felt like giving up? Like you just can’t do it anymore? I know because I have.
There have been times in my life when I was so tired, overwhelmed, and discouraged that I didn’t think I could take another step. But even in those dark moments, I always knew that there was one thing I could do: I could surrender to God.
When we surrender to God, we acknowledge that He is in control and that we are not. We are admitting that we can’t do it on our own and that we need His help. And while it can be a scary thing to do, it is also the most freeing and liberating.
So if you feel like giving up, I encourage you to surrender to God.

3. “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.” – Psalm 37:5-6 (NIV)
4. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)
5. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” – Psalm 46:10

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:1-4 (NIV)

I hope these scriptures encourage and comfort you as you surrender your worries and concerns to God. He is faithful, and He will sustain you. Trust in Him today.
5) Get Counseling
The word “counsel” comes from the Latin word meaning “advice” or “guidance.” In the Bible, it is used in a few different ways. Sometimes it refers to the act of giving advice, while other times, it refers to the person who gives the advice.
It can also refer to a group of people who offer advice or guidance.
When it comes to surrendering to God, counseling can be helpful. A counselor can provide support and guidance as you navigate your faith journey.
A counselor can help you to explore your fears and figure out a plan for how to move forward. They can also help you to identify any areas of resistance that may be holding you back from fully surrendering to God. You can either go to online counseling or face-to-face. I’ve done both and I know how powerful and healing therapy can be!
6) Never Give Up On Giving It To God
There will be times in your life when you feel lost, scared, and alone. You may feel like you can’t go on and that giving up is the only option. But it’s important to remember that God is always with you, even in your darkest hour.
When you surrender to Him, you are giving up your own strength and relying on His.
This doesn’t mean that your problems will magically disappear. But it does mean that you are not facing them alone. God will give you the strength and wisdom to handle whatever comes your way.
Never ever give up on giving your fears, worries, and anxieties to God.
7) Giving Yourself (And Others) Grace
One of the hardest things about surrendering to God is that it requires us to let go of our own plans and agendas. We have to trust that He knows what is best for us, even when we can’t see it.
This can be scary and frustrating, especially when things don’t seem to be going our way.
On this journey, it’s important to remember that we are not perfect and that we will make mistakes. Surrendering to God is a process, and there will be times when we stumble along the way or become too stubborn to welcome His help (Like I used to do). But that’s okay!
We just need to pick ourselves up and keep going.
Likewise, remember that other people are on their own journey with God. Just because someone else seems to have it all together doesn’t mean that they don’t struggle with surrendering to God. We all need grace, both from God and from each other.
Conclusion: Surrender Your Life To Jesus Christ!
When we are giving “it” to God in utter surrender, it can be scary. We might feel like we’re losing control or that we’re not good enough. But Jesus loves us no matter what.
He knows our flaws, and He still wants us to surrender to Him. Because when we do, we are giving up our plans and trusting that He has something better for us.
Will you surrender your troubles and let God? It is always worth it!
