How To Challenge Yourself To Workout & Get Stronger Leg At Home
For me, besides writing, traveling is life.
Well okay, it’s not quite that serious but it’s pretty major. My heart pounds at the mere thought of hopping on a plane that’s bound for a far off land and exploring a new culture and meeting new people.
For me, it’s Jesus, family, writing with traveling following closely behind.
The wanderlust is strong with this one.
However, there are ummm, how do we say, obstacles that get in the way of me traveling as much as I need to (and I do mean need):
1. Money
2. Money
3. Being out of shape
Now, I know you can travel if you’re out of shape.
But when I went to London over 10 years ago, we did a whole lot of walking.
And when I say a whole lot, I mean in the sedentary kind of way.
No, we weren’t walking 15 miles a day but we were doing 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.
When you’re out of shape, that’s a whole lot of steps.
So now I’m in the midst of planning another trip to Europe, Lord willing.
The plan is to go to Paris, London, and Rome and I know those whole lot of steps are in my foreseeable future.
So I’m determined to be fitter and healthier before I head back overseas.
Besides wanting to look better in the pictures because they are forever, I also want to be able to go on 3-hour walking tours, stand in line at the Coliseum, and sprint to my terminal with my carry-on bag if I’m running late (because I’m not trying to pay for a checked bag).
So in order to be able to do all these things and more, I decided to create a challenge and I’m inviting you all to do it with me, especially if you like to travel.
I’m calling it the Eiffel Tower Stronger Legs At Home challenge.
According to my friend Google, there are 328 steps to get to the first floor of the Eiffel Tower.
I would love to be able to walk to the first floor and take some amazing pictures (yes I do know there is an elevator in the Eiffel Tower but it’s about the experience.
I also know there’s a second floor but baby steps my dear.
Baby steps…pun intended) But I know at my current fitness level, I would more than likely have a heart attack if I attempted to climb over 300 steps.
Oh yeah, and this post contains affiliate links to great products that will help you in your health journey. I will get a commission if you decide to buy from these links but I’m only recommending products that I feel confident about.
What is the Eiffel Tower Stronger Legs Challenge?
The challenge is to work my way up to being able to climb all those steps. I’m going to do this three different ways:
- Walk to my Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home – 5 Mile Fat Burning Walk DVD (This link is an affiliate link which means if you buy this DVD, I will receive a small commission from the sale. This does not raise the price for you, promise.) This is the same walking DVD that helped me lose my first 50 pounds…but then I got shiny object syndrome and stopped using it.
- Climb the steps in my house, slowly building to the 328 steps.
- Tone my legs using free YouTube workout videos. This butt and thigh workout is one of my favorites/least favorites if you know what I mean.
Of course, I’m not going to do all 3 of these every day.
I would suggest doing the Walk at Home DVD 3 times a week and the toning videos 3 times a week.
Then you can do the stair climbing every other day unless your legs tell you otherwise.
Remember, don’t overdo it.
Listen to what your body is telling you to do.
How Do I Figure Out How Many Stairs I Need To Climb?
So, If you want to join this challenge, what you need to do is count the steps in your house or whatever steps you are going to climb.
Then divide that number by 328 and then you’ll know how many flights you will need to take to reach 328 steps.
For instance, I have 12 steps in my house. 328 divided by 12 is 27.3.
So I know I need to be able to walk up my stairs 27 or 28 times so I can be ready for the real thing.
I’m starting with 5 or 6 flights at a time and then adding 2 flights every week . Well, I say 2 flights.
I may just add one. My legs will tell me next week how many I should do.
You can start with however many flights you would like and work your way up.

Why Do This Challenge If There’s An Elevator?
We all need a why for the goals that we set.
Although, I’ve been losing weight and getting fitter, the progress has been slow lately because I haven’t been properly motivated.
If I think about my workouts as a way of getting in shape to be able to travel more, then I am far more likely to do it.
Traveling is a strong motivator for me and if it is for you, then I would love to hear about some of your adventures below in the comment section.
Plus, taking the stairs is so beneficial for our legs.
The steps work our glutes, hamstrings, calves, and the most important muscle…our hearts.
Working all of these muscles and our cardiovascular system makes it the ultimate at-home legs workout.
How Long Is This Stronger Legs Challenge?
This challenge is for 6 months.
Realistically, I’m probably going to need at least 6 months to be able to do this, if not more.
Although it would be amazing to be able to do it sooner than that.
How Do You Measure Success In This Challenge?
- If you are able to walk the 328 steps without falling over or your heart stopping then you are successful :). This is the main way to show that you completed this challenge.
- If you lose inches off of your thighs, then you have had some success even if you weren’t able to climb all 328 steps. Be sure to measure your thighs before you start and then do it every month or so to track your progress.
- If you lose weight, then you certainly have had a measure of success in this challenge. Even losing 5 or 10 pounds is beneficial for health.
