40 Weight Loss Journaling Prompts To Help You Change Your Mindset & Get Healthy For Life!

How many times have you started a new diet or a workout regimen but quit that diet within a week?

Ugh, I know…me too.

Too many times to count!

When you do this it’s like you are always starting from scratch and spinning your wheels!

Starting a diet, quitting, and then starting all over again a few weeks or months later is something I have been frustrated by for ages.

The cycle is vicious, and it takes massive willpower to come out from it and win!

Speaking from experience, weight loss is not just about counting calories, sticking to a diet, and working out every day.

Don’t let the commercials fool you.

It’s all about the right mindset.

Often our inner turmoil, doubts, and insecurities are precisely what holds us back to achieve our weight loss goals.

One of the biggest things I ever did for my weight loss journey was to start journaling.

Journaling may seem pointless initially, but when you address your emotions and thoughts related to your weight loss challenges, it’s an insanely advantageous habit you won’t want to lose.

That’s why I highly encourage you to use these weight loss journaling prompts that I’m about to share with you.

When you choose the most appropriate weight loss journal prompts or weight loss reflection questions based on your thoughts, you will begin to witness a gradual difference in your weight over time.

– How to Create A Powerful Weight Loss Journal

Obviously, if you’re going to start weight loss journaling then you need to know how to create a weight loss journal. Am I right!? So I’ll first start off by telling you what you will need for your weight loss journal!

Now everything depends on just how detailed and functional you want your weight loss journal to be. Because there are so many things you can put in a weight loss journal.

The first decision you need to make is whether you want a digital or physical weight loss journal. I have both a physical and digital weight loss journal and planner in my shop but more on that in a minute!

– Choose The Best Type Of Weight Loss Journal For You!

So what should you decide on next? Well once I decided whether I wanted a paper or digital weight loss journal, I would then choose if I wanted a freestyle or a structured journal.

What do I mean by this?

You might be the kind of girl that just wants to open a plain notebook or journal (or a Google Doc or Evernote doc) and just start writing about your weight loss journey freestyle.

I’m assuming though, that if you’re looking for journaling prompts for weight loss you want more guidance on what to write. That means you would prefer a structured or guided weight loss journal, know what I mean?

Instead of a notebook of endless blank pages, you want a weight loss journal that has prompts, trackers, calendars, & more!

I like both freestyle and guided journals, though, so I use both! You can see the digital weight loss journal, I use below. It’s created using the free app Trello!

The bottom line is, don’t feel boxed in because that’s not what weight loss journaling is about!

– Choose The Supplies You Need For A Printable Weight Loss Journal

Now, let’s talk about what materials & supplies you need to get started with weight loss journaling!

If you chose a paper weight loss journal then you will need:

1) Your paper weight loss journal:

If you’re a freestyle journaler, then just pick up an empty notebook and get started! If you want a guided journal, then I highly recommend using a printable weight loss journal. The beauty of a printable journal like this weight loss meal planner is that you can use it year after year if you want!

And you can print as many pages as you would like!

2) Pens:

You will need pens if you choose a paper journal. I am a pen addict and probably have over 500 pens at this point and honestly, it’s still not enough!! Some of my favorite writing pens are Scribble Stuff Felt Tip Pens

and Pilot Frixion Pens (because I make soooo many mistakes and I like having beautiful pens that I can write with AND erase if need be!)

3) A Beautiful Binder For Your Printable Journal:

I love storing my journaling printables in a binder! Isn’t this pink marble 3-ring binder just gorgeous? You get a pack of 2 binders for an awesome price!

– Supplies Needed For A Digital Weight Loss Journal!

Can I just say I love digitally journaling? Okay but enough about me! Really and truly, all you need for a digital weight loss journal are the following:

1) The digital weight loss journal:

Most obvious is that you will need a digital weight loss journal. There are a ton of them on Etsy but I can’t vouch for any of them because I’ve never used them.  I just use my own digital weight loss planner and I sell it in my shop if you want to see it!

2) The software needed for that journal:
You will also need access to the software that the digital planner is available on. Many digital planners need to be used with Goodnotes or Notability and I believe they are only available on iPads which stinks because I don’t have an iPad.

That’s why the digital planners I sell are available on the completely free app Trello which you can sign up for here.

3) The device needed for your journal:

And finally, you will need a device to actually use your planner! Many people use iPads for their digital journals and planners.

But for people like me who don’t have an iPad, we have to make other arrangements. That is one of the biggest reasons I decided to create my digital weight loss planner in Trello.

You can open Trello on any device: an iPad, Android, iPhone, Mac computer, PC laptop…whatever. You choose!

– 3 Must-Have Weight Loss Journaling Ideas For Your Perfect Journal!

Okay so now for some digital & printable weight loss journal ideas! Of course, there are many things you could put in one, but the MOST important parts of any weight loss journal (besides the journaling prompts) are:

1)  Weight Loss Tracker:

Create a tracker for your weight loss journal! Why? So you can track your progress! Using a weight loss tracker is a way to see if you are heading in the right direction or if you may need some tweaks in your diet!

Below is a picture of the weight loss tracker in the You Glow Girl Weight Loss Journal & Planner in the HAYC shop!

2) Workout Planner:

You’ll also want to write down and schedule your workouts for the week. Once you’ve planned your schedule, you can then see where you can fit in your workouts to accommodate your busy life!

3) Meal Planner:

A HUGE (probably the huge-est) part of losing weight is your diet. So a meal planner is exactly what’s missing in your weight loss life. I’m telling you…creating a meal plan and then meal-prepping your plan can be what takes your weight loss to another level!

 – Why Are You Really Weight Loss Journaling?

It’s super important to be clear on why you are starting to journal for weight loss and stay consistent with it.

And saying because you should or because you heard it might be a good idea.

That’s not enough to fire up your creative flames and consistently start writing.

If you want to journal about your weight loss, you need to do it for deeper reasons!

You should have a greater goal for journaling than journaling itself.

Otherwise, it will never become a practice you look forward to and you’ll quit midway.

So before you grab a pretty journal from the store, don’t just think about how often you’ll write in it.

Simply determine your reasons for wanting to do it.

– 3 Great Reasons To Start Weight Loss Journaling

1) To change your emotional relationship with food

Many times the reasons we overeat is not because we are hungry but because of some emotional or mental challenge(s) we are dealing with. Journaling is an eye-opening way to pinpoint why you use food to deal with or avoid emotionally painful problems in your life.

2) To track what you are eating

Like I’ve said, I thought I wasn’t eating much until I started to actually track the nutrition of my meals. I was SHOCKED by how much I was truly eating and without weight loss journaling, I wouldn’t have known this!

3) To track how much you are moving

You don’t have to exercise to lose weight but you do have to exercise to get fit and it does make weight loss easier and faster. And just like we underestimate how much we eat, we OVERestimate how much we move. A weight loss or fitness journal can help you track this.

4) To write down what you’ve learned in your weight loss journey

The more you research, watch Youtube videos, and read books about weight loss, the more your knowledge will grow. And your weight loss journal will be right there to capture all of this new information that you’ve gathered on your journey.

And writing it down will help you remember what you’ve learned and implement it!

– The Benefits of Journaling For Slaying Your Weight Loss Goals!

Journaling is an exceptionally valuable tool for your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

Here’s a quick look at a few of the benefits of journaling for weight loss success:

  • It helps to focus your mind on your weight loss goals regularly
  • It helps to set an intention in your mind to start a healthy habit for the day
  • It helps you to peek into your deeper feelings and address your thoughts and emotions
  • It gives you a purpose to work harder towards your weight loss goals
  • It keeps track of the progress you made and how you made
  • It forces you to search deep inside your heart for answers
  • It makes you closer to God as you address some of the most personal and complex questions about your life
  • Breaks down long term goals into smaller achievable ones
  • Identifies unhealthy habits
  • Pins down hidden obstacles in your journey
  • Helps you meal plan and eat healthy foods

– Does Journaling Really Help With Weight Loss ‘Cuz I’m Skeptical

I know you might be thinking “hmmmm, how can journal prompts for weight loss actually help me”? I totally get why you are skeptical.

On the surface, it doesn’t seem to make sense. But what people don’t always understand is that there is an emotional and mental aspect part of being weight loss. And one of the best ways to sort out your thoughts and feelings is by cracking open a journal.

Using weight loss journal prompts are an amazing way to figure out why you turn to food for comfort or why losing weight has been such a struggle for you. But that’s not all.

– How Weight Loss Journaling Helped Me Lose 50 Pounds!

Weight loss journaling helps in another MAJOR way. So let me tell you a little story. I used to believe way way back in the day, that I had some sort of underlying medical condition and that was the reason why I couldn’t lose weight or why I had gained weight in the first place.

Why did I believe that? Because I didn’t believe that I ate that much. I was sure of it. It wasn’t until I did a little weight loss journaling in the form of tracking and writing down what I ate that I began to realize ummm….yes, I actually do eat a lot.

And not only that, I was eating foods with tons of calories! And without the aid of weight loss journaling, I would not have realized it this! And I eventually went on to lose 50 pounds! So yeah, weight loss journal prompts work ya’ll, for real!

– When to Use These Weight Loss Reflection Questions?

Every day we go through plenty of different feelings and emotions which go unaddressed and unnoticed.

Because of this, I highly recommend using these weight loss reflection questions daily or at least as often as you can.

Not only will it make you more motivated, but it will also help you to renew your mind away from the negativity and recommit to your weight loss journey each day.

It will also help you choose healthy habits daily and not get (as) distracted.

By writing down and diving deep into these weight loss journaling prompts, you will be more likely to choose healthy oatmeal for your breakfast instead of the morning doughnuts!

If journaling every day gets too much for you, you can always start slow and try to do it at least 2-3 days every week.

Remember. It’s a lifestyle change. It will take time to adapt to it and achieve results.

Choose a few days based on your schedule, look at these weight loss reflection questions, and get started with your weight loss journaling journey.

– Which Weight Loss Journal Prompt Will You Try?

Now that I have 40 exciting weight loss journaling prompts and weight loss reflection questions, which one are you choosing for today?

No, don’t put it off for tomorrow.

That’s what you call procrastination (which I know all about) and it all but assures that you won’t ever start (trust me, I know how hard it is!)

I want my readers to successfully lose weight and are live their healthiest life.

So pull out a piece of paper from the drawer or download a pdf printable and start today itself.

By addressing your inner emotions and thoughts with these journaling prompts, you can build the right mindset to make your path to a healthy body way easier!
