But with so many commitments, it can be hard to find time for a workout (or let’s face it…find the energy but that’s a different story).

This is where using a digital fitness planner comes in.

Today I’ll explain to you:

  • The Benefits of Using a Digital Fitness Planner & Journal
  • What to Include in Your Digital Exercise Journal
  • How to Use A Digital Fitness Planner

– Benefits To Keeping A Digital Fitness Journal: Why You Should Personally Keep a Fitness Journal

So you might be like “ummm why do I need to use a fitness planner?” What’s the point right? You work out and you keep it moving.

But hang on a minute.

There are some very good personal reasons to keep a workout planner & journal.

Let’s explore them.

1) Motivation To Keep Going

I know when I first started keeping a fitness journal, it served as motivation to keep exercising on a consistent basis.

And that’s because I was able to see over time the progress that was being made.

Whereas before, I would just work out with no record of what I had or hadn’t done. Now I can see which workouts actually produce results.

So in this way, keeping a planner or journal to track your workouts will help you identify the types of exercise your body responds well to, so you can focus on what works best for your body type and goals.

2) A workout journal keeps you on track

Second, a workout journal helps keep track of how often and how much time you spend working out in a day.

You can write down not only how long you worked out but how you felt afterward.

That way, on those days you do too much, you can know for the following day that you need to ease up a bit.

3) Exercise planners and journals can help you fit in exercise around your busy schedule

Plus a workout journal can also act as a planner that you can use to schedule your workouts too…we’ll talk about that later.

By planning and scheduling our workouts in advance, we’re able to see if there are extra opportunities for exercise throughout the day that we might not have considered before.

4) Shows you where you can improve

And third, keeping an exercise journal will help you see areas where there is room for improvement in your current routine-or where there may be other opportunities for activity that you haven’t tried yet!

If you’re starting to get bored with your workout, look at your journal and see if you’ve been doing the same exercise video for a week, and switch it up if so.

5) Makes setting and keeping track of your fitness goals easier

One is that it will help you get a better understanding of your fitness goals. People often have a hard time figuring out what they need to do in order to achieve their goals, but when they’re writing it down, they can see things clearer.

This means that if you’re trying to lose weight, for example, you’ll be able to see which movements are the most effective at burning calories.

6) Shows your fitness progress over time

Another benefit is that with a journal, you can track your progress over time. If you don’t keep records of your workouts and how long you’ve been exercising each day, it can be hard to tell how far in the process you are.

A journal makes it clear what’s working and what isn’t. You’ll also be able to see where there’s room for improvement or unexpected weaknesses that may need more work or attention.

– This Is The Easiest App To Create Journals & Planners

*I now interrupt this blog post for this public service announcement*

The digital workout planner that I created is in a free app called Trello.

Technically, it’s a project management app but I use it for so much more than that.

I use Trello as a Bible and prayer journal, blog and business planner, as well as a fitness and weight loss journal, which you can look at here: You Glow Girl Fitness Journal & Planner.

One of the reasons why I love using Trello so much is because it is so customizable!

If you buy a planner or journal made with Trello you can change the name of any section, you can edit the names of each card, and rearrange them in the order that fits your lifestyle.

Plus you don’t have to have an Ipad or any expensive apps to use planners and journals made in Trello.

All you have to buy is the Trello-based product and the creator will send you a link to access the product.

Trello is extremely functional and you’re able to personalize Trello planners and journals to your needs.

Plus it’s easy to use! You can download the free Trello app here and play around with it.

– What To Include in Your Workout Journal

Okay so now that you know which app to use for your fitness planner, what you should include in it?

These are the sections that I have in my digital workout journal:

  • Weekly workout planner

The weekly workout planner is where you can schedule your workouts not really just for the week but for the whole month.

The way I have the wellness planner & journal divided makes it super simple to schedule all of your workout sessions for the entire month.

  • My favorite/most fun workouts: Use this section of your planner to make a list of the workouts that you enjoy doing the most. These may not be the most effective workouts but ones that you actually have fun doing! You include links to articles that have workouts you like, Youtube exercise videos, workouts you saw on Pinterest. It can be a playlist of workouts you get from all over the internet.

  • Most effective workouts: This differs from the last section. This will be a list of workouts that you know help you see a real difference in your body. You may not enjoy doing them but you know they work. You might also record how many inches or pounds you lost when you did a specific workout consistently.

  • Exercise Equipment: Have you ever been in a store and saw something that you wanted to buy but then you were like “Hmmm, I think I have something like this already”. I know I’ve done this many times including for fitness equipment. So why not make a list of all the workout gear you have like your dumbbells, fitness bands, kettlebells. That way you save more and can create a well round fitness routine.

  • Weight Loss Tracker/Progress Page: Your workout journal should be a detailed account of your workouts. Include the type and duration of exercise, as well as how you felt after the activity. Be sure to include what movements your body enjoys, which ones it dislikes, and how many repetitions you did for each exercise.

  • Journal Pages: It’s also important to share what other aspects of your day may have impacted your workout. Did you do any strength training or cardio? Did you eat breakfast before or after the workout? Did you sleep enough hours last night? All these factors can affect your mood and ability during an exercise session.

  • Fitness Goals: Your workout planner should have a section for you to write down any fitness goals you have. Not only that but you might also have daily health goals that you want to track so that should be included in your planner. That way, in a week’s time, you’ll be able to see if progress has been made toward those goals.

  • Meal Planner: Half of the battle when it comes to losing weight and/or getting fit is what you eat. Are you eating fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats? What are some healthy meal ideas you can incorporate into your everyday diet? You definitely want a meal planner section in your fitness planner.

  • Healthy Habits Section: Getting healthy isn’t something that happens overnight. It comes for a series of making healthy decisions every day. Did you drink enough water? Did you eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables? Having a section of your fitness journal where you can check off healthy daily habits will go a long way towards helping you meet your health goals!

How To Use Your Workout Journal

A workout journal is a tool that can help you stay accountable and motivated.

It also helps you stay aware of what type of movements your body enjoys, how often you exercise, and how much time you spend in the gym or outside each day.

One benefit to keeping a workout journal is that it can help identify areas for improvement.

One way to use your journal is to write down your activity throughout the day.

This includes things like running errands, going to work, cleaning the house, etc.

Include both your workouts as well as other active parts of your day.

Why?

Because I know there’s some times when I’m really sore and I don’t know why.

But then I look at my journal and see that I was super active in the last few days I suddenly understand why I feel tired. Then I allow myself to skip a work out so my body can heal.

You should also keep track of your food intake and any injuries or pain from different movements.

I also like to write down any treatments I used to help me heal an injury so I know what to do if it happens again.

– Some Final Thoughts about the Benefits of a Workout Journal

There are many benefits to keeping a workout journal.

It helps you stay accountable for your fitness goals, it can help you see where there is room for improvement in your routine, and it can help you find exercises you enjoy.

One of the most important ways a workout journal can benefit you is by providing accountability. The best way to get started with a healthy routine or stick with one is by making sure that you have someone or something holding you accountable.

Your workout journal is the perfect way to ensure that you’re meeting your goals day in and day out.
