Bible verses for weight loss

I’ve been struggling lately.

I know that, as a Christian woman, my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and that means what I eat is important to God.

Why?

Because what I eat goes into my body!

And the body is what?

The Holy Spirit’s temple!

So when I eat junk food it not only affects my physical health but also my spiritual health.

The problem so many of us face though is that unhealthy food is so much more convenient than healthy food.

And then the weight gain begins and accelerates and accumulates and it’s just out of control!

That’s when we need peace and rest in the arms of Jesus and His word because doing this on our own just isn’t going to work!

So if you need some encouragement to get back on track with your weight loss journey please stick around because you’re in the right place!

Today we are going to talk about:

-The weight loss journey and its struggles

-Health problems that come from being overweight

-Emotional eating and why we do it

-How to renew our minds

-Weight loss bible verses to chew on

-Weight loss prayers to pray

– The weight loss journey & why it’s a struggle

Let’s just be real.

The weight loss journey is hard.

If you’ve been overweight or obese for a long time then switching over to a whole new way of eating is enough to make you want to give up before you start.

Here are some of the main reasons why trying to lose weight is less fun than a trip to the dentist’s office:

-We’ve been eating this way a long time and bad habits are hard to break

Healthy eating is hard and confusing. It’s hard to know what food choices are healthy and what foods aren’t because one minute a doctor is telling you to eat fruits and vegetables and the next minute another doctor is telling you fruits are bad and are just sugar (eye-roll)

-The devil likes us to be in an unhealthy body because it is outside of God’s will and the devil always likes for us to be outside of God’s will. So he likes to tempt us to give in to the lust of the flesh.

-Unhealthy rich food like cake, fried chicken, and pizza (like real pizza) taste delicious and we want more of it

-Conventional vegetables and fruits don’t always taste great. Organic and fancy veggies taste better but…

Healthy foods cost more …I’ve heard claims to the contrary but we all know it’s true.

-We have unexpressed trauma that made us turn to food for comfort and now we are addicted. And we don’t want to deal with that trauma because it’s painful and it’s just easier to act like it’s not there.

-Insert your own reasons here.

Yeah, so basically losing weight bites (okay pun intended).

And yet, because our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, we can’t just throw our hands up and not even try.

Fortunately, because our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, we can turn to Him for guidance and help on ways to make this journey less painful.

But before we go into that, let’s talk about some health issues that arise from being overweight.

– Health problems that come from being overweight

Before dive into the more mental and spiritual aspects of weight loss, let’s discuss some of the physical issues that go along with being overweight.

Even though I’ve lost over 50 pounds, I have still been overweight all of my adult life.

I can say that God has blessed me with good health, free of disease (except from that one prediabetes scare).

However, I know that being overweight can lead to issues like

-knee and joint pain

-Prediabetes and diabetes

-Stroke

-Heart disease

-High blood pressure

-Stubborn belly fat

And so many other health problems, many of which can be avoided when we lose weight.

– Weight loss motivation

Losing weight is a slow laborious process.

So how can you motivate yourself to lose weight when you’d rather do literally anything (we’ll almost anything)?

Well, I know the motivation for me losing 50 pounds was me being diagnosed with prediabetes.

That spurred me into action because I didn’t want to get diabetes. So a disease or being in imminent danger of getting a disease is a great motivator.

But what if you don’t have a big scary potentially incurable disease looming over your head ready to attack at any moment?

How do we get motivated to lose weight and take care of our bodies, when you haven’t experienced major health issues?

– Here are some ideas that you can use as motivation for weight loss

-Wanting to be healthy for God and because your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit

-Wanting to be healthy for your family because they need you and want you to be around as long as possible

-Wanting to be healthy for yourself because you want to feel better physically and be fit and ready for anything

– How to renew your mind  through journaling to make weight loss easier

The thing about weight loss too is that it’s an everyday commitment.

It’s an everyday process and an everyday struggle. And because of that our minds need to be renewed every day.

I wish weight loss wasn’t such a struggle. Maybe for some people, it isn’t.

For me when I lost 50 plus pounds it wasn’t terribly hard but this current 50 pounds that I’m working on has been way more challenging.

So I have to renew my mind each day, remind myself of why I want and need to do this. I mean I avoided diabetes once but of course, I could still get it.

Not only that but I want to please God with my body and I don’t think I do when I’m not feeding my body with healthy foods and getting plenty of exercise throughout the day.

So of course one way to renew your mind is with prayer which I will share with you later. Another way is through journaling.

I loooove writing down my feelings. Whenever I get overwhelmed about anything, I write. And weight loss is overwhelming!

That’s why I created a digital weight loss planner & journal that has a prayer journal and a scripture meditation journal (and so much more)…so we could have a place to express our fears, hopes, goals, and frustrations about our weight loss journal.

You can try my weight loss journal for free by entering your email address below!

And it’s pretty too which is of the utmost importance (only kidding…sort of).

One of the best ways to renew your mind is of course through reading the Word of God.

God’s word is His message to us and so when we do a Bible study we are listening to Him speak directly to us. In a minute I’ll be sharing some powerful Bible verses that we can reflect on while we navigate these weight loss waters.

– A Powerful Weight loss prayer

Another way of renewing your mind for weight loss is through prayer.

So what I’d like to do right now is pray for all of us going through this weight loss journey.

Dear Lord,

As you know, losing weight is a struggle. It’s a seemingly constant battle that is frustrating and exhausting.

We truly want better health but the desires of the flesh trip us up time after time. Maybe we exercise one day but then gorge on cake.

Or another day we eat a healthy breakfast but by the end of the day, we’re in a fast-food drive-thru.

This constant struggle with our weight is looked at as a physical battle but we, as your children, know it’s a spiritual battle.

The enemy wants us to feel hopeless. He wants us to feel like we will be stuck in this endless cycle forever.

But I know that with Your strength and guidance and power, our struggles with weight will, one day, be a struggle no longer.

So we ask for Your strength as we navigate this weight loss journey and pray that you will be there with us every step of the way. All these things we pray in Jesus name, Amen!

–  What Is Emotional Eating And How To Overcome It

A big part of the reason why weight loss is so hard is because of emotional eating.

Emotional eating (my definition) is when you eat, not because you’re hungry but because you have some emotions that are too painful to deal with so instead you eat.

Emotional eating is a way to take your mind off of what’s bothering (or torturing you). The logic makes sense in a way.

Eating comforting foods makes you feel good and releases serotonin in your body which makes us feel good. (Source

While painful emotions do NOT make you feel good. So, I mean, which one would you pick? Definitely the eating right?

But the thing is since we aren’t turning to broccoli or carrots for comfort but instead to pizza and chocolate cake, eventually, that way of eating catches up with us.

And then we start to feel pain both emotionally AND physically because the weight starts to get crazy out of control.

And those toxic emotions?

Still there.

So now we’ve got double trouble.

So in the end emotional eating is so not a good thing.

Instead of eating your emotions “away” (but not really) start chewing on these verses that I’m about to share with you…meditate on them.

Once you start meditating on these scriptures, journaling your feelings (perhaps using the weight loss planner and journal), get more physical exercise, a new eating plan, and praying over your weight loss goals, I think you’re going to see some mountains moving!

 – 25 Powerful Bible Verses For Weight Loss

Okay so I’m not a huge fan of taking Bible verses out of context but forgive me this time.

I don’t think these verses need any explanation in regards to weight loss.

If you’re struggling with weight loss, you know exactly why I picked these verses…but I’ll let you weigh in, in the comments below (I know, I know…super cheesy and corny)

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
