7 motivating mindset journaling tips to smash your goals

Girl, sometimes I just don’t wanna do anything. I have all these goals and dreams and it seems like they’re right there within reach but you just get burned out from trying to accomplish them.

Can you relate? You just don’t really want to try anymore.

You don’t feel motivated and start to lose faith that you’re on the right track or that you’ll ever succeed. That’s how exactly how I’ve felt so many times before.

I know that when I’ve played my one-millionth game of Project Makeover (give or take a few), I need to snap out of it and try a new approach.

Naturally, it makes sense for me to turn to my first love which is writing.

When you need a mindset shift in a hurry, journaling (and prayer) is one of the best things you can do!

We all get burnt out, uninspired, and mentally exhausted sometimes but we don’t always understand why.

Mindset journaling is a boss at revealing all of the reasons why we might be feeling this way.

So if you’ve felt less than excited about pursuing your goals lately, I hope these mindset journaling prompts and tips will get you pumped about what the future holds for you!Oh yeah, and this post contains affiliate links to great products that will help you in your health journey. – What Is Mindset Journaling?

So what is mindset journaling? Mindset journaling is a form of writing you can use to gain new insight or wisdom into your life or any situation you’re going through.

Let’s say you feel stuck in your life. Things are not going the way you know God wants them to but you don’t know what your next steps should be. You just know you HAVE to move forward because this is not the abundant life that Jesus promised.

So what should you do?

You grab a journal, open it, jot today’s date on the first blank page, and start writing. I’ll tell you what to write in the next section because we aren’t just doing a stream-of-consciousness type journal, although that’s useful too.

I want you to journal with a purpose. By the end of your journaling session, I want you to have created an action plan of what you will do next to move forward in your life.

However, I do acknowledge that there are times when even writing might feel like too much.

If that’s the case, please read the next section to see what might be going on.

When You Want To Journal But Even That’s Too Overwhelming

Facing your emotions sounds great and all but what if you’re thinking this “Nicky, I’m so unmotivated I don’t even want to journal or grow at all for that matter.” If that’s the case you might be dealing with something deeper than just being uninspired or mentally drained.

Sometimes a mindset shift just isn’t going to cut it.

It might be that you’re depressed or have chronic anxiety.

If you suspect that’s the case, I strongly urge you to see about getting therapy of some sort. If you aren’t ready to go to a therapist in person (because I know how tough that can be), then please consider online therapy. There are several options but the one I’ve used personally is online-therapy.com.

If you want to know more about it you can read my posts about online therapy here.

But it may not be as serious as a mental health disorder. Perhaps you have been working on your goals like mad and you’re burnt out.

If this is your situation, I give you permission to rest your brain and do some self-care.

I’m currently listening to the book 10x by Grant Cardone. He says we should do 10 times as much as we think we should in order to achieve success.

While I don’t think he’s wrong, I firmly believe that you need to take a break every now and then or you will break.

Don’t worry… your dreams will still be there when you get back!

– Unique Mindset Journal Prompts & Tips To Elevate Your Mindset

Ok, love, hopefully, you’ve ruled out depression as the cause for your discouragement. If so, let’s dive into growth mindset journal tips! If you follow these steps, you should have a bomb action plan to follow by the end of it. Sweeet!

1) Start with where you are

It might be painful, but take an inventory of your life. And don’t leave out the good parts because I know you want to.

Don’t do that. Write down the good and the not-so-good.

Of course, we are trying to change the not-so-good parts of your life but you still want to write down the aspects of your life that are going well and that you’re grateful for.

Why?

So that you will feel hopeful.

If you feel like everything is going wrong then you’ll believe that nothing will change. These are called self limiting beliefs If you see that there are good things in your life, you’ll think “well shoot, if God has blessed me with all of these things, maybe I shouldn’t feel so meh. Plus, perhaps there are more blessings to come.”

You might want to do a brain dump or you could keep your life inventory page nice and organized by using columns.

Draw a table with two columns, one side labeled good and the other side labeled not-so-good. Try not to use the word bad just so we can keep this exercise more positive, even if that’s not how you feel. We are aiming to silence your inner critic.

2) Write where you thought you’d be and why you think you aren’t there.

Now that you have your braindump or columns, look at your not-so-good list. Let’s say you have a “crappy job” on your not-so-good list.

Write down what job you thought you’d have or the job you wish you had. Why is it that you don’t have it? What is it that made you feel stuck in this job?

Fear? Not qualified for a better job? No jobs available in your area and you don’t want to move? You apply for jobs but they don’t call you back?

What is it that is keeping you from a better job (or from maybe starting a business)? And as good as it might feel, try really hard not to solely blame someone else.

I’m not saying other people don’t affect our lives and help contribute to us making bad decisions.

But when we lay our problems at the feet of someone other than ourselves where does that leave us?

Powerless. And we ain’t trying to be that. Whatever situation we are in, there is almost always a way out except in the most extreme circumstances.

Now, we might not like the way out but there is one…and if you need to vent and be angry about your situation, then do that next.

3) Vent your heart out (no censorship) and let it go

Yes, it’s okay to be angry about your situation, whatever it is. Now hear what I’m saying…don’t go do something that you’ll regret.

Ephesians 4:26 says “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:” Don’t go wildin’ out. Just go ham on your journal page.

Get it all out. Blame whoever you want to blame for your situation if that makes you feel better for the moment.

Go crazy. And then let it go.

Okay, so you may not let it go immediately. I’m not naive. Anger doesn’t dissipate with the writing of one journal entry (or does it?).

But eventually, if you want to move forward in life, you will have to let it go. Once you feel like you’ve vented enough, move on to step 4.

4) Now brainstorm some ideas (no censorship)

I’m so proud of you! You’ve let your anger go (Right? Maybe?). Okay, maybe you’ve let enough of it go, to start brainstorming some ideas.

We have to get you in a place where you are ready to take action. You have your no-so-good list of what you want to change.

You’ve evaluated why these things haven’t changed. You went Mike Tyson on those venting journal pages. But now you’ve got to make some changes.

So brainstorm some ideas. Let’s go back to the “sucky job” example. You know your dream job isn’t a job at all but to be a business owner.

But you don’t know how to start a business and feel overwhelmed. Then start doing research. Google and Youtube are your friends. Take notes in your mindset journal.

Then move on to step 5.

5) Write down 3 goals you have (big or small)

Armed with the research you just did, you should now have some ideas of what your main goals are.

Going back to the previous example, your 3 goals might be:

1) start a clothing boutique

2) Build a brand

3) Earn $1 million in revenue in 3 years.

6) Now turn that mindset journal into a prayer journal

I know not everyone is a Christian so if you’re not you can skip this step. But really…DON’T skip this step. Okay, you can if you must, but really don’t skip it, please. Prayer changes things.

When we come to God with repentance (Jonah 3:1–10) and humility (2 Chronicles 7:14

He will hear our prayers! Now, that doesn’t mean that He will give us whatever we want. But He will hear it. There’s no better way to start a new journey than to ask for God’s guidance and wisdom.

7) Write down concrete action steps you can take in the next 3 days to start making those goals a reality

Now that you have your goals, it’s time to write down 3 action steps you can take in the next 3 days to start making it happen.

We don’t want to let a whole week go by. That’s too long and you’ll lose momentum. Instead, commit to taking action in the next 3 days. Write down what you plan to do and execute it. But if you do it even sooner then that’s even better.

There’s no point in procrastinating if you’re ready to go (trust me I know all about procrastination ). If you know you’re ready to start a business, like we talked about earlier, write down 3 steps you can take to toward making that dream come true.

You might get your LLC started, open a business bank account, and start sourcing materials for the products you want to sell. The point is to just start and quickly!
