– What Is Self-Discovery Journaling
I know you might be wondering what self-discovery journaling even is…well self-discovery journaling is a powerful exercise that can help you understand yourself and the direction of your life in new ways.
I know that I used journaling many times to evaluate the decisions I make, if I’m becoming the person God wants me to be, and if I’m fulfilling whatever purpose He put me on earth to do.
I know it might not seem like simply picking up a pen and a piece of paper (or typing if you like digital journaling) can help you figure out such important questions in life. But I know for sure that it has helped me process emotions like hopelessness and confusion many times.
The thing is, if you don’t do any kind of internal reflection on your life, the years will keep rolling by and you’ll find yourself constantly swayed in the tide of life. Look at the last 20 years of your life.
I bet they went by faster than you thought they would…at least they did for me. I regret some of the time that I wasted. But also I know that there were some choices I made in those 20 years that I look back on and think “Lord, thank you for guiding me in that decision and providing that opportunity”.
I hope that this is how you feel too. And I know that armed with self-discovery journaling prompts I will continue to make good decisions in the future.
I’m passionate about helping you find out who YOU are and I believe these writing prompts are the key to unlocking that discovery for you!

– What It Truly Means To Be “That Girl”
So you may not even know what I’m talking about when I say becoming “that girl”. So becoming “that girl” is a trend that’s all over TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, and Pinterest.
Basically, any social media platform where Gen Zen and Millenials hang.
The idea of becoming that girl is that you have this social media perfect life of:
waking up early (which is a great idea)
eating a healthy breakfast (also a wonderful idea)
working out (once again, great)
journaling and planning your day (I’m a fan)
“perfect glass skin” skincare routine…
I mean you get the picture. It’s all a carefully curated picture of this perfect girl’s life that we can all aspire to and emulate or be envious of. She is “that girl” that people want to be. I have no problem with these habits in and of themselves.
Honestly, these are all amazing habits to develop and will change your life over time. But what I want to encourage you or any other “girl” to be careful about is getting too caught up in so-called “perfection”.
The only person who has ever been perfect is Jesus and I’m grateful to just take that burden off of my shoulders and not have to live up to anyone’s impossible standards.
I’m a firm believer in trying to always become a better version of myself but that’s just it. It’s the better version of myself not the better version of someone else, if that makes sense.
I will always be the worst version of someone else because I can’t be who they are.
These other women have created a “that girl” routine for themselves and while you can learn from their routines, it’s far better to have a personalized version of “that girl” that is unique to you and how special you are.
God made you different from everyone else and that frees you from having to become anyone else’s version of “that girl”. Let’s talk some more about why it’s so important to know who YOU are so you don’t get negatively influenced by trends.
– Why It’s So Important To Know Who YOU Are
Ya’ll it can be such a struggle to know who you are in this world. People are dealing with so much confusion right now when it comes to their identity.
And I wish that I could say that Christians were immune from this challenge but we all know that’s not the case.
I want so badly to never have any doubts about who I am, what my purpose is, and the direction my life should go. I use a prayer journal to ask for wisdom and guidance but sometimes it feels like it doesn’t come. Don’t get me wrong… many times when I do ask God for clarity He grants it.
But sometimes I feel like more mixed up about my decisions than I did before I prayed. And when that happens, you either make bad choices or you make no choices and become stagnant.
That’s why it’s so important to have a solid identity that doesn’t get tossed around in the wind, directionless.
Using self-discovery journaling prompts, especially coupled with prayer journaling is a powerful way to discover who you truly are because you’re asking your Creator to tell you.
And once you have an identity and a strong sense of self, purpose and direction flow through that identity.
One of the dangers of lacking a strong identity is that you are often plagued with an inferiority complex, lack of self-belief, an unintentional way of life, and lack of self-respect.
The ugly truth about this is that it’s easy for others to sense these traits in you, and leverage them to their advantage which is a good way to be bullied into situations you’ll regret.
Knowing who you truly are, gives you a level of confidence that is not easily shaken by someone trying to unduly influence you. Instead, you’ll have the courage to tell people to politely “buzz off” when they try to take you off of your destined path.
A strong sense of self also helps you understand your values, strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. By gaining valuable insight into your character and identity, you can make better decisions about your life, career, relationships, and personal goals.
Moreover, self-awareness helps you improve your way into a positive self-image, which leads to increased confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. You are less likely to feel lost or uncertain when you are secure in who you are and what you stand for.
Knowing who you are, also enables you to talk to others more effectively with others. You are more capable of asserting yourself when needed, expressing your needs and wants, and setting healthy boundaries in your relationships.
Ummm, perhaps now you can see just how important self-discovery is!
– How To Find Your Identity In Christ
If you’ve been struggling to find your true identity in Christ, this one’s for you.
Prayer has to be my number one tip. This is because in the place of prayer is where God reveals to you His plans and purpose for your life. So I encourage you to spend some time with God at any time you do not feel sure about where you’re heading in life. He’ll reveal your identity in Christ to you and guide you on how to live it out.
Read your Bible: God’s word is your manual for life. Inside it is where you learn about how God created you in His image and likeness and how He sees you.
1 Peter 2:9 says “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light…”
You see, the more you read your Bible and study God’s word, the more you discover who God wants you to be. Treat God’s word like a mirror that shows you your true reflection- special, precious, bold as a lion, secure in God’s secret place, etc that’s your real identity.
Seek Christian community: Surround yourself with other Christians who can encourage and support you as you seek to understand your identity in Christ. Join a church, attend Bible studies, and participate in small groups.
